'free as the morning sun', the title cut off this album, provides
an apt soundtrack and gives us and idea why it's taken an anthemic
status in numerous clubs this summer. coming straight out of
brighton and following hard on the heels of da lata, this ben
mitchell/chris fleming produced 10 track set covers brezzy
cappoeira inspired bossa to easy snapping jazz with spring loaded
bass line, racey rimshots and swinging horns that mesh with sweet
harmonies and vocals. this is live stuff, not a hint of programming
in sight, and it features a galaxy of jazz heads including stellar
mark edwards on piano, jim mullen on guitar and bosco d'oliviera on
percussion along with singers billy godrey and yve medends. 'free
as the morning sun' evokes memories of working week and this lp has
a lithe but sensuous energy that rides on jeff walker's slithering
but funky b-lines.
