"The last decade or so has seen a flood of
compilations from the funky end of jazz so another
one - and a double one at that - hardly seems to be
something to get too excited about. But it is.
"Funky End" is a superlative collection of familiar
and not so familiar funk tunes from a diverse range
of artists. It not only includes such funkmeisters
as James Brown, Parliament and the Average White
Band but also giants from the jazz world like Miles
Davis, Pharoah Sanders, Donald Byrd and Roy Ayers.
Stand-out tracks are far too many to mention,
although a personal favourite is the jaw-dropping
cover by Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 of Buffalo
Springfield's "For What It's Worth". With such
variety Funky End could easily have become a
patchwork, but it manages to avoid the pitfall of
many compilations and retain a sense of unity. And
unity is what the funk is all about. Awesome"

Weighing in at just over two and a half hours, "The
Funky End" is a seriously heavyweight contender to
the oft-disputed funk compilation category.
Containing killer cuts from such luminaries as Roy
Ayers, Herbie Hancock, Donald Byrd and Jimmy Smith,
the collection oozes pure quality, which ranges from
downtempo classics such as 'Everybody Loves the
Sunshine' to the storming saxophone dancefloor
madness that takes place 'After Midnight'. With
classic tracks provided by Parliament, George
Benson, Terry Callier and Nuyorican Soul amongst
others, The Funky End is an exhaustive selection
spanning the full funk spectrum (although music of
the 80s is sadly under-represented). Overall then,
this collection delivers knockout funk which
certainly hit this music fan. Its 'champion'.

Seems this had a few releases, one on the Verve
label (this rip), one on the Universal Jazz imprint
which had 40 tracks and also on the Phantom label,
according to amazon.com. Not quite sure why, perhaps
for 2 different zones (i.e. USA and Europe) or
something, anyway this is a dope collective of
classic funky soul, so enjoy it!
