Collecting some amazing talent under the moniker Open Door, those
cats at Hipbone totally smear the NYC stank all over this
impressive collection of joints.
Combining elements of funk, groove, trip-hop and electronica,
"What's behind door #1" is a solid experiment in neo-soul. Vicki
Bell's sweet and sultry vocals wrap around the listener like a
cashmere blanket. Multi-instumentalist and vocalist Peter Adams'
tasteful simplicity opens up the songs and lets them breathe. Ray
Grappone keeps the beat tight and in the pocket, the percussion
warm and organic.
Along with a who's who roster of notable talent (including
turnbalist Filthy Rich), the Open Door crew take us away to
someplace refreshing and new, with some truly great vibes. Tracks
like "Fallin'" and "Shelter Me" will get the heads bobbin' while
"Pleasure Tript" and "Let It Go" will get your booty movin'.
A standout track is a funky, soulful re-imagining of the Pink Floyd
cut "Breathe". This album captures the feeling of chillin after
hours at a smoky little joint in the hip part of town. Best served
with some candlelight, a nice bottle of wine and your signifigant
other. Enjoy. --www.longislandmusicscene.com
