▓████▓▌ Counting's existence, Catalogue is a reasonable ▓▌
▓████▓▌ enough collection ù and the only one on CD ù of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Fortran 5's '80s existence. The duo remixed a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ variety of the tracks with the help of regular ▓▌
▓████▓▌ producer Paul Kendall, aka PK, while Mute boss ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Daniel Miller and Holger Hiller helped with ▓▌
▓████▓▌ tweaking here and there as well. Combining rather ▓▌
▓████▓▌ wry senses of humor (consider the odd pet ▓▌
▓████▓▌ celebration on the jazzy "Grass Snake") with an ▓▌
▓████▓▌ open love for electronic music ranging from the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ poppy to the experimental, I Start Counting ended ▓▌
▓████▓▌ up sounding a bit like mid-'80s Depeche Mode ▓▌
▓████▓▌ crossed with some oddly psychedelic touches. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ There's squirrelly melodies, harder EBM percussion ▓▌
▓████▓▌ body slam,s and more ù when present, David Baker's ▓▌
▓████▓▌ singing tends towards the wistfully tentative ▓▌
▓████▓▌ approach of much '80s English synth music as well, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ his London-area accent coming through clearly in a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ semi-speaking manner. Thus hearing something like ▓▌
▓████▓▌ "Million Headed Monster" is at once rather relaxed ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and just creepy enough, his observations on urban ▓▌
▓████▓▌ life more unsettling as they go. The obvious ▓▌
▓████▓▌ influences from the likes of Cabaret Voltaire and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the Legendary Pink Dots are there as well ù Paul ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Hardcastle, even! ù and samples are cut-up and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ reassembled in bemusing ways, thus the snippet of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ JFK apparently proclaiming "communism...the wave of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the future!" on "17 Pens." It's an obvious ▓▌
▓████▓▌ foreshadowing of such efforts as the Sid James/Syd ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Barrett cover of "Bike" in Fortran 5 days, while ▓▌
▓████▓▌ "Cranley Gardens" takes a different tack entirely, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ string-swept, cinematic, and just doom-laden ▓▌
▓████▓▌ enough. If in the end I Start Counting was mostly a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ derivative pleasure, it's still a pleasure, though ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Fortran 5 itself would prove to be the more fluid ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and appealing incarnation in the end. ▓▌
