psychedeliasmith are dean meredith and jonny spencer
two guy's that shared the same addiction......vinyl.

deans background came from the dance scene when he started out in
a band back in 89 called bizarre inc. although everything started
very well for them unfortunately things began to get difficult as
major record companies saw the potential and gave them the break
they needed but took away their artistic freedom and though they
still made great music they were not making the music they wanted.
jonny, on the other hand, had had the freedom but never the break.
his background was a little different from dean's, his music was
more rock orientated starting in bands in the mid eighties with
music of a very 60's influence in fact he recalls in one
particular band in the late 80's that sounded like oasis
an a and r man said "too sixties" (right place wrong time!) . he
soon became more interested in the growing dance scene and by 91
was working around the country as a vj (visual's jockey) in the
     ever expanding rave world.
the two met in 93 when jonny moved back to stafford from
birmingham . stafford if you can imagine, is a small place with
nothing to do like many places that exist in the world, so the
best escape was music. they connected through a love of music as
both had vast collections of records acquired from the many second
hand stores around stafford they shared a love of soul,
psychedelia, funk, jazz and even prog that would eventually mutate
to them creating a sound they both loved.
to pass the time they would make dj tapes of all their favorite
     records
calling themselves the ufo club (after the famous club who's
residents where syd's pink floyd ) after over 12 hours of tapes
of music where made , they decided that it would be a good time to
create some of their own music for these dj ing shenanigans so
they created 2 tracks (fixy jointy and auger) and got up enough
     money to create an acetate
thinking the tracks where strong enough, they decided to invest in
another 2 copies to give to their favorite dj's at the time . they
     where
alex sparrow and kirstie mc'ara long time friends who ran a club
called athletico and the now "notorious" norman cook.
athletico where just starting a label and needed some fresh talent
so when it arrived they snapped it up immediately wanting to sign
"fixy jointy" 3 days later norman called saying that he loved
"auger" and wanted to work with them on getting it released.
the only problem with norman was the name . he thought
psychedeliasmith was too jokey ( fatboy slim hahahaha!?) so for
this release they called themselves "the sensateria" (after a
great birmingham psychedelic discotheque). so began a good
     friendship with the great man.

since then the band has released 4 singles the latter being a
taste of what is to come on the album. their last single is a
change to the usual big beat thing and has more of a live feel
     with jonny performing vocals
unfortunately (and this is inevitable ) some people are
disagreeable about the change in style , expecting more of the
same from this duo but they needed to move on because the scene
they started in had become a little bit washed out (there was no
such thing as big beat when they started) and norman had become
the king of the scene and nobody could better him (including
psychedeliasmith) it was time for change the album written in the
summer of 98 (and yet to be released) became an ecclectic mishmash
of the groups favorite sounds and this entailed bringing friends
in on occasions to play sessions. the more the album progressed
the more they figured out that playing live would be one hell of a
nightmare for just 2 people without practically miming a set. so a
band was constructed to fit the sound of the studio onto a stage
format. the band members come from different parts of the region,
the furthest away being: neil cooper from derby (who played drums
with bands such as 'the beyond' and 'cable') who has been recently
cited as one of the influences of the band gomez's drummer, then
there's jim mate from crewe, a regular on the stoke scene , some
may know him as 'doctor hammond' he has had individual success
working at ripp studios on remixes , one of the more memorable
being 'blue boy's "remember me" two members from stone : jonny
spencer on vocals and sequencers, ian turner , a high standard
solid bass player with many sessions under his belt then finally
there's greig bradley another session maestro from stafford
cutting across on lead guitar to complete the sound. the music you
get know is a solid mix of new and old, rocks quite a lot, but
still holds a lot of the elements of dance and funk. with the band
, has come the ability to reproduce the psychedeliasmith sound
from the lp into a live work that, in some cases, improves on the
original album sound giving the band a new edge. dean, although
not playing in the band plays with the band and helps to promote
the psychedeliasmith sound through the format of dj so that both
     avenues of performance are covered.
expect an album of many different flavours when you hear it and be
     prepared to be pleasantly surprised.
as we all know there are different strokes for different folks !
