Release Notes:
--------
Punk is, as a rule, short on tennis metaphors and songs about mittens. But both
appear on the sixth solo album from the former hardcore singer from Hampshire
whose stock has been rising ever since his 2005 reinvention as a ôfolk-punkö
troubadour, combining the bluntly English, narrative appeal of Billy Bragg with
the everyman-in-the-arena ambitions of Bruce Springsteen.

Although inverted snobs make much of what he has described as his ôsocially
dislocatingö education at Eton (on a scholarship), the 33-year-old has grafted
his way up the hard way, logging a total of 1,700 gigs to date. Things really
took off for him at the Olympics opening ceremony in 2012 where he demonstrated
a knack for bringing the rowdy camaraderie of a pub gig into a stadium setting.

His finest album to date is still 2013Æs Tape Deck Heart, on which he brought a
new intimacy to his songwriting as he scrutinised the break-up of a long-term
relationship. Amid the carnage of cider-soaked days spent on friendsÆ sofas, he
realised ôthat love is about all the changes you make and not just three small
wordsö.

This is his Moving On Album, and Turner throws real thought and energy into his
forward momentum. It begins slowly. ôBy the waters of the Thames, I resolve to
start again,ö sings Turner to the gently plucked acoustic guitar of The Angel
Islington. There is an appropriate, nursery rhyme simplicity to the melody: the
broken man takes baby steps up and down the same few notes. Recovery then goes
from 0-60 with the boisterous thrash of Get Better, in which a girl takes ôa
plain black markerö and draws a line under his broken heart: ôWe can get better
because weÆre not dead yet.ö

As he ôstares down the barrel of his fourth decadeö, Turner decides to seize the
day. Against the pummelling drums of Demons he rails against ôdelivering a
perfect body to the graveö and takes advice from ôold folkö on the
mandolin-sprung Opening Act of Spring. Love Forty Down is all about fighting
against the odds; the more strained Mittens finds him lamenting that he and his
lover ôfit like mittens but never like glovesö.

At times his roar-throated tone gets repetitive, but Denver singer/songwriter
EsmΘ Patterson adds subtle vocal contrast on the haunting Silent Key, a grungy
number that buys into the urban myth that Christa McAuliffe û the teacher who
died in the 1986 Challenger Shuttle disaster û survived the explosion and
transmitted the words ôIÆm alive!ö during the 2 minutes and 45 seconds it took
the shuttle to fall to earth. TheyÆre probably not the words McAuliffe used, but
theyÆre the ones Turner wants to hear his fans bawling at gigs. Carpe scream.
