'Looking Ears complete' is a boxed collection of recordings of
electronic music for tape, with and without instruments, by the
Dutch pioneer, Ton Bruynel (1934-98). The compilation is a
worthy tribute to a controversial figure in contemporary music
of the late 20 C. The first three CDs were produced by Bruynel
in his lifetime; the rest by a foundation set up to perpetuate
his work. He was something of a loner and eccentric, and
preferred the company of open-minded artists in other mediums
than contemporary composers, by whom he was excluded because of
their 'collective embrace of twelve-tone and serial music'
which, in his opinion had lost sight of the listerner.
Explaining his own philosophy, Bruynel wrote "I object to the
qualification of sound as a thought process by the human brain
rather than by the ear".
He is fully brought to life in this limited edition, which
together with Ton Bruynel's collected works has a CD-Rom which
works beautifully and has several essays and a large collection
of photos taken in his studio.

Volkskrant, 23 september 2004 by Frits van der Waa.
A comfortable working climate was for composer Ton Bruynel an
crucial condition. "Just as an visual artist or sculptor,
I want to have my private studio', he once said. Not only was
Bruynel one of the fist pioneers in Dutch
electronic music, he also was the first to establish his own
studio in 1959. His quest for the right environment even
led him later in life to Spain and France, where he died on May
5th 1998 at the age of 64. The recording label
BVHaast started the release of Bruynel's work on CD during the
nineties. This project is now adopted by the Dutch
Center for Electroacoustic Music (NEAR), culminating in the
recent release of Looking Ears Complete, a box consisting
of six CD's representing nearly Bruynel's entire oeuvre.
Referring to music on tape, Bruynwl was depicted by his
colleagues as ' the man with the golden hands'. His music,
mostly written for a combination of electronics and live
instruments, scintillates in the ear.
His love for nature emerges in numerous compositions, evoking
by their versatile layers a camera, slowly surveying
a panoramic landscape. Titles like Brouillard, Rain and
Listening Landscape are as well-chosen as significant.
But Bruynel was also blessed with a sense for the theatrical
(and of humour) , showing especially in his vocal works.
This testimony of a creative career of nearly 40 years, is a
magnificent edition. The booklet provides a first-rate
biographical essay by Thea Derks and is moreover as little as
possible encumbered with unnecessary information.
This can be found on the CD-rom part of Cd-1, which includes
the texts, a worklist, essays, programme notes
and photographs. Even a number of scores is represented -
although the user might easily overlook them since
they are stored in a separated digital file.
