the next instalment (after 'carnaval') from the forthcoming bugz
& friends in puerto rico project, 'hecho en casa', sees bugz main
man in san juan, afronaut, come with another call and response
bullet. like 'carnaval', 'golpe..' is a traditional 'plena'
(puerto rican folk song) recorded live in old san juan's 'rumba'
club by afronaut who then took away son del batey's vocals and
percussion and worked dem into this london via san juan dancefloor
bomb. already caused a fuss on cdr but reaction to this record
since it was played on gilles peterson's bugz special has been
incredible.
the full album, which is a collaborative project between bugz in
the attic and san juan's candela, is set to be released through
bitasweet/candela records next year and this track captures the
idea behind the project in it's essence by balancing the vibe of
puerto rico with bugz production. the album features a line-up
comprising the uk's afronaut, neon phusion, ig culture, seiji,
mark force plus san juan's local 12, giovanni hidalgo, son del
batey, candela allstarz among many other local heroes. son del
batey, a 6-piece bomba group from san juan will be releasing a
3-track ep of more traditional bomba recordings on candela in the
near future.
