Ray Barbee was always one of my favourite skaters when I was
growing up. His section in 'Public Domain' (the fourth commercial
Powell video) along with the 'incredible rubber boys' blew me away.
I remembered reading an interview with him a year or so later,
where it had an amazing photo collage of him with his guitar and he
mentioned that he loved to play.

I never found any of his music, but I'm sure it was used in some of
The Firm (that's Lance Mountain's skate company, who sponsor Ray if
you were wondering) video parts and 411 adverts. Recently, my
friend Ray-man dropped me this CD which Paul Shier had found in SF
on his travels - it's incredibly hard to find by all accounts.
Well, I'm glad he did find it because right now it's on my CD
player cheering up my rainy windows and piles of washing littering
     the flat.
Ray Barbee can indeed play the acoustic guitar, and with
accompaniment from friends on both saxophone and marimba the
package sounds great. 'Let's Persevere' sounds like a Tommy
Guerrero (who also rode for Powell as a pro skater back in the day)
track, with its 'doorbell sounding' rings and jolly guitar melody,
and would make great skate video music. It's the sort of thing you
can put on and everyone in the room will be like, 'What's this?
This is cool...'. Happy music, I guess, and there's not enough of
that around. 'A Word Aptly Spoken' has tiny vocal-sounds running
along with Ray's chords and sounds lovely.

There's six tracks here and they're all very good. Ray's music is
the kind that you can stick on in the office or in the car and
no-one will complain - you'll probably end up having to burn a

couple of spare copies for yourself as well, when your mates try
     and borrow your one.
Not easy to find, but well worth the effort. --spinemagazine.com
