North Carolina's ace Outside imprint has already carved a
niche for itself with a demented spin on that hardy
perennial, spannered electro. EP's from Ben Milstein, Carl
Finlow and Daz Quayle's Scarletron have damaged our speakers
recently with rugged mashups and schizoid jacking a given.
Nktar is the latest addition to Outside's increasingly
righteous roster - 'Truizm' opens us up in proper fashion, a
teetering drum machine motif works its way in, gearing up
for the impressive machine-soul brinkmanship of the track.
Benign melodies almost disguise the deadly floor potential
of a tune like this, merciless bassline culture at its best.
And when a bassline paves the way, not far behind there's
the electric detonation of a big, decimated, roller of a
break: think Carl Craig's epic 'Chicken Noodle Soup' and
you're just about gettin there.'Rite thru' comes over a
little reticent at first, more sedate tempo wise, softened
by a spoken vocal - but allowing a sophisticated
disintegration of the beat, bass science for sure ...'Venom'
fully delivers on its name - blorty bass tones show again
Outside's predilection for the dirtiest low-end around, only
remitting slightly as a looping synth wash and a lovely
breakdown offer a release from the dark, visceral flow of
the tune. Future anthem material, no doubt. 'ways2go' closes
it all up, a broken, fractured beat and again the
subfrequencies are challenging to say the least, an
insistent neuro-active rearrangement of booty vibes, yet
busting it to new audiences with a feisty percussive
demeanour. Killer!
