│║ ║ │
│║ Description : ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ EyefearÆs constant line-up changes in the early ║ │
│║ stage of their career seemed the halt progress ║ │
│║ in terms of gaining recognition internationally. ║ │
│║ Whilst the band prospered on the national stage, ║ │
│║ gaining a fair Australian fan base, the line-up ║ │
│║ problems caused the band to fall into obscurity. ║ │
│║ However, in 2000 the problems seemed to be ║ │
│║ behind the band as both Danny Cecati and Garrett ║ │
│║ Ryan joined to complete the line-up, with the ║ │
│║ former providing vocals until this very day and ║ │
│║ the latter provided the keyboards until a mere ║ │
│║ two years later when he departed the band and ║ │
│║ the line-up issues became a problem again. ║ │
│║ According to the band themselves, good ║ │
│║ keyboardists are hard to come by in Melbourne ║ │
│║ and plucking Sammy Giaccotto out of his normal ║ │
│║ everyday life to be apart of the well liked band ║ │
│║ was by sheer luck as he ran into one of the band ║ │
│║ members in a local music store. Although ║ │
│║ Giaccotto would later depart, the band claim ║ │
│║ that the presence of the keyboards grew ║ │
│║ significantly during his reign due to his ║ │
│║ incredible talents. Giaccotto has been playing ║ │
│║ keyboards for most of his life and the presence ║ │
│║ of the keyboards is definitely felt more in the ║ │
│║ latter records than it was in early recordings ║ │
│║ which were certainly hampered by the production ║ │
│║ values. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ So, with the arrival of Cecati and Giaccotto, ║ │
│║ Eyefear had themselves a decent line-up with ║ │
│║ which to build on their early promising ║ │
│║ performances on the debut. Giaccotto would ║ │
│║ provide a very useful addition in more ways than ║ │
│║ one since this record, æA World Full of GreyÆ ║ │
│║ was recorded at his own studio and definitely ║ │
│║ contains a more profitable production, which is ║ │
│║ wonderfully clear. I myself havenÆt had the ║ │
│║ opportunity to listen to their mid-era career ║ │
│║ material, including the sophomore record, but ║ │
│║ IÆm under the impression that the last two ║ │
│║ records are the most notable in the bands ║ │
│║ history since the line-up was less of a problem ║ │
│║ and when it did become a factor, decent ║ │
│║ departing musicians were replaced with more ║ │
│║ skilful talents and with that, Eyefear became ║ │
│║ more of a force in the Australian progressive ║ │
│║ scene. According to the biography of the band, ║ │
│║ Eyefear are heavily influenced by the likes of ║ │
│║ Dream Theater and Evergrey, two bands I have ║ │
│║ never really taken the time to listen to, ║ │
│║ although I have had more experience with ║ │
│║ Evergrey whom I feel are a lot darker in their ║ │
│║ atmospheric presence than Eyefear who are ║ │
│║ sprinkled with light symphonies by the keyboards ║ │
│║ which gives the background atmospherics a much ║ │
│║ more airy feel in comparison to the dank ║ │
│║ Evergrey. In comparison to the debut, æA World ║ │
│║ Full of GreyÆ is a far superior acknowledgment ║ │
│║ of the bands talents. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ This record is consistent and exhibitÆs a far ║ │
│║ greater vocalist as the leader in Cecati, whose ║ │
│║ voice soars to great heights. Although IÆm not ║ │
│║ entirely convinced by his performances, he is a ║ │
│║ better vocalist and more adept at providing a ║ │
│║ performance that Eyefear requires than any of ║ │
│║ the former vocalists the band has had. His ║ │
│║ voice, to me, is a bit too melodramatic on ║ │
│║ occasions and has a tendency to rise above the ║ │
│║ instrumental depictions. I would prefer a calmer ║ │
│║ influence, but progressive metal has a tendency ║ │
│║ to exude at least some level of arrogance and ║ │
│║ pretension. The vocalist requires a monumental ║ │
│║ voice in order to rise like a phoenix and take ║ │
│║ control of the situation at hand. Cecati can do ║ │
│║ this, but there is a feeling that he is far too ║ │
│║ comfortable in his position as ôleaderö. I would ║ │
│║ like to hear more of a presence from the guitars ║ │
│║ and bass especially since it evades my attention ║ │
│║ for large parts due to the fact that Cecati ║ │
│║ takes complete control at the foreground of the ║ │
│║ songs, as with songs like æChangesÆ which sees ║ │
│║ his voice reach new heights and the overwhelming ║ │
│║ melodrama unfolds without much thought as to how ║ │
│║ the instrumentation is coming across. The ║ │
│║ keyboards are the only true consistent performer ║ │
│║ in terms of the instrumentation. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ They switch from symphonic to deeply moving when ║ │
│║ the piano passages become a regular factor of ║ │
│║ the soundscapes, as with æChangesÆ when Cecati ║ │
│║ performs alongside the piano sections for once, ║ │
│║ instead of trying to outshine them. IÆm not a ║ │
│║ big fan of his, though I do appreciate how he ║ │
│║ has changed the band almost single handily from ║ │
│║ mediocre to dynamic. If it were not for his ║ │
│║ presence, IÆm not sure Eyefear would have ║ │
│║ amassed the sort of fan base they have now. ║ │
│║ Without him, the instrumentation, in parts, does ║ │
│║ sound quite flat - especially the drums and ║ │
│║ guitars. Unless he and Giaccotto are performing ║ │
│║ alongside these elements, Eyefear have a ║ │
│║ tendency to sound a bit dull. Whether Eyefear ║ │
│║ are a one trick pony or not will be answered in ║ │
│║ the future since Giaccotto has departed from the ║ │
│║ scene. IÆm hoping not, but I have a bad feeling ║ │
│║ that they are. Whether Cecati will be able to ║ │
│║ lead the band onwards from this unfortunate ║ │
│║ departure is another issue. Overall, though I ║ │
│║ accept that Eyefear have improved since the ║ │
│║ mediocre debut, there are still a number of ║ │
│║ issues including the overshadowing vocals and ║ │
│║ lack of presence by everything other than the ║ │
│║ keyboards. A decent affair without being ║ │
│║ brilliant. ║ │
