     Bron in 1942, Meredith Monk is one of the most important
     experimental vocalist of our time. With this release (probably
     her most ambitious work to date) she enters in the realm of
     avantgarde opera.
     The Libretto tells the Story of Alexandra a girl/woman
     discovering herself while travelling both inwards and outwards.
     Her travels are told in three part as she goes from self
     discovering to self awareness. This kind of symbolism is
     related to the activities and courses that Meredith Monk
     organizes regularly using voice extreme exercises as a kind of
     musical Yoga.
     This Opera is loosely based on the life of Alexandra
     David-Neel, the victorian adventure who was the first western
     person in the Forbidden City of Lhasa in Tibet.
     To achieve her goals she uses her "extended vocal techniques"
     which includes bird-like singing, scary ululations, spoken or
     half spoken words, micro-tonalism, etc.
     She trained the cast to go beyond their vocal abilities in an
     almost spiritual way.
     This is maybe not the best release for getting into Monk's
     world as it is really complex and dense, but for old fans this
     might well be her best effort. Absolutely recommended.
