Everyone's talking about ways to bring indie-rock and electronics
together; on Marathon Hangout, producer Matthew Nish-Lapidus would
rather see the two sides go to war. For every concession to pop
structure, there's an effort to negate it: "Today I Can Only
Remember My Address" feeds tranquil acoustic strums through a
mechanized shredder in Four Tet fashion; "That Was the Last Cookie"
halts its percussive build for a two-chord, Televisionary breakdown
that practically transforms the song into a glitch "Marquee Moon";
while "Stiff" aims for full-on rock anthem glory with an incessant
Sonic Youth-style distorto-riff, but the tentative start/stop
rhythm won't give into the urge so easily. Mn-l loses his grip in
the album's final quarter, when the album's dialectic tension falls
apart on aimless tracks like "This Is What I've Got" -- but until
then, it pays to be ringside --www.eye.net
