In the former British colony, a Chinese (Oakey) & a Japanese (Toshi),
supported by an Englishman (Shaun), had conspired to sway the
conforming local clubbing scene with the sound of latin, soul,
broken, funk, afro, deep house, break-beats & drum 'n' bass. Thus
borne the euphonic blend that has subsequently become the trademark
of Brown Sugar.
Since the maverick beginning, Oakey & Toshi have played alongside
UFO, Towa Tei, & Howie B at some of the largest venues in Hong Kong
to thousands of clubbers. Toshi is also savoured outside of Hong Kong
when he is touring around Japan with Tokyo?s Ska Paradise, Speed
King, DJ Utsumi..
Their regular night in Tokyo has also featured live performance by
Keiko & Banakin (Paris-based afro percussionists), pianist Mr.
Suzuki, Lotabomba, etc. Indeed, Brown Sugar proffers beyond the
grooves. An award-winning promo producer, Toshi has directed numerous
tv commercials, promos, music videos and his own short film. Toshi
was also a pioneering VJ setting the trend of video-mixing which is
now a regular feature at many partys in Asia.
Oakey, a professional audio engineer, has composed original music
scores for a Hong Kong indie film "Father's Toy", remixed for a local
hip hop group LMF, and produced music for the Japanese music tv
channel VMC.
In fact, for years, the duo has been producing music for tv
commercials & promos.
Recently, Sunshine Enterprises has signed the duo for yielding the
original Brown Sugar flavour. The debut single "On the Moon" is ready
for break-thru and make the DJs swing! the dancers dance! the
trainspotters spot!
On the B-side of the moon you'll find their own approach to the
freakier Dancefloors of this world - zoomzoom!
