│║ Description : ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Whether by an admirable tenacity, obstinate ║ │
│║ stubbornness, or a mixture of the two depending ║ │
│║ on one's perspective, Annihilator and its lone ║ │
│║ alter-ego Jeff Waters have soldiered on through ║ │
│║ thick and thin for going on three decades now. ║ │
│║ Perhaps what is most curious is how this ║ │
│║ progressive air to the band's music has been ║ │
│║ maintained even after coming around full circle ║ │
│║ and largely returning to their older ways over ║ │
│║ the past couple of albums. Perhaps this new ║ │
│║ found conservatism could be linked to the ║ │
│║ retro-thrash revival that began take the metal ║ │
│║ world by storm towards the end of the last ║ │
│║ decade, though ironically Waters opted to avoid ║ │
│║ changing what was arguably his band's weakest ║ │
│║ link and closest tie to modernity until earlier ║ │
│║ this year, namely Dave Padden. To be fair, the ║ │
│║ recently departed lead vocalist had brought his ║ │
│║ A-game to the two most recent Annihilator LPs, ║ │
│║ but he still sounded a bit out of place amid the ║ │
│║ old guard speeding and thrashing going on, and ║ │
│║ thus with Suicide Society they've truly come ║ │
│║ full circle. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ While he never really put his best foot forward ║ │
│║ during his time handling lead vocal duties, Jeff ║ │
│║ Waters is a decent singer both in a thrash and ║ │
│║ old school heavy metal context, and this is the ║ │
│║ first Annihilator where his disposition as front ║ │
│║ man truly blossoms into form. Things get off to ║ │
│║ a bit of a zany, overly comical start on the ║ │
│║ mid-tempo title song "Suicide Society" as Waters ║ │
│║ decides to mix in a Dave Mustaine narrative ║ │
│║ approach with all the snarls and gruff front and ║ │
│║ center to what would otherwise be a solid ║ │
│║ rendition of what Randy Rampage brought to Alice ║ │
│║ In Hell. But once things get going and the speed ║ │
│║ and technical madness ensue, Waters' over-the- ║ │
│║ top snarls and occasional squeaky clean ║ │
│║ vocalizations fit in nicely, in direct contrast ║ │
│║ to Padden's more husky bellows which always gave ║ │
│║ Annihilator's sound more of a metalcore flavor, ║ │
│║ even after their last interlude into similar ║ │
│║ territory Metal. True staples of old school ║ │
│║ technical thrashing where speed, fury, and ║ │
│║ occasional melodic hooks ruled the roost are on ║ │
│║ full display on "My Revenge", "Creepin' Again" ║ │
│║ and "Break Enter", all of them arguably the best ║ │
│║ work to come out of this fold since 1990 and ║ │
│║ definitely hinting strongly at a return to the ║ │
│║ glory days of the late 80s musically. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Naturally it's not a pure, straight shot of ║ │
│║ unmitigated speed, which was not really the case ║ │
│║ even when going back to the formative years of ║ │
│║ this band. Occasionally things get just a tad ║ │
│║ out of hand in the quirky department and a few ║ │
│║ unpleasant but thankfully fleeting memories of ║ │
│║ King Of The Kill and Refresh The Demon make ║ │
│║ their way into the mix, but largely the more ║ │
│║ modern elements tend to conform a bit more ║ │
│║ closely to the better days of modern Annihilator ║ │
│║ with Jon Comeau on vocals, and although he ║ │
│║ doesn't really spend much time doing Halford ║ │
│║ shrieks, Waters is definitely far closer to ║ │
│║ Comeau's superior vocal inflections and punch ║ │
│║ than Padden ever was. Perhaps among the more ║ │
│║ oddball moments on here that takes thing a bit ║ │
│║ off message is the barbershop quartet sounding ║ │
│║ vocal intro to "Snap", which is also the only ║ │
│║ song on here to come off as an overt modern ║ │
│║ groove metal number, sugared over with a bit ║ │
│║ more melody and smoothness of course. But ║ │
│║ thankfully there is also plenty of flashier and ║ │
│║ funner moments like the technical speeder ║ │
│║ "Narcotic Avenue" and the shed happy progressive ║ │
│║ number "Death Scent", which is also one of the ║ │
│║ areas where Jeff's quirky ideas end up working ║ │
│║ quite well. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ There is little chance that Annihilator will ║ │
│║ ever top their initial brilliance as heard on ║ │
│║ their classic debut album Alice In Hell, but ║ │
│║ this is definitely the closest thing to a ║ │
│║ faithful tribute to the raw technical brilliance ║ │
│║ and outlandish speed that culminated to said ║ │
│║ album. The only real downside to Waters' ║ │
│║ approach on here is that he lands on some truly ║ │
│║ spellbinding moments during the faster sections ║ │
│║ of several songs here and seems to let go of ║ │
│║ them too quickly in favor of mixing it up more. ║ │
│║ That's always been his Achilles Heel, a tendency ║ │
│║ towards being over-ambitious and coming away ║ │
│║ with something akin to a grand palace with just ║ │
│║ too many ornament and buttresses which obscure ║ │
│║ the majesty of the more basic parts. ║ │
│║ Nevertheless, Suicide Society is an absolute win ║ │
│║ as far as a de facto solo effort out, and a ║ │
│║ strong continuation of the solid structure ║ │
│║ that's been in place since their 2010 self- ║ │
│║ titled album. For those craving thrash metal ║ │
│║ that's mixed up and loaded with crazy riffs and ║ │
│║ outlandish lead breaks, this is a definitely go ║ │
│║ to album for this year. ║ │
