│║ Description : ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ German Rebellion are kind of like heavy/power ║ │
│║ metalÆs history teacher, starting out with ║ │
│║ ShakespeareÆs Macbeth û A Tragedy in Steel back ║ │
│║ in 2002 and then the glorious The History of the ║ │
│║ Vikings trilogy between 2005 and 2009, before ║ │
│║ continuing on into the German territories with ║ │
│║ Arminius: Furor Teutonicus in 2012. Now they are ║ │
│║ back with even more of a mouthful of a title, ║ │
│║ Wyrd bi≡ ful arµd û The History Of Saxons (Fate ║ │
│║ remains wholly inexorable), quite the mouthful, ║ │
│║ but by now the Germans have developed a ║ │
│║ reputation to keep things from being too simple, ║ │
│║ at least in the song titles. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Somewhere on the travels between the Viking and ║ │
│║ German lands, the band lost three members with ║ │
│║ guitarists Uwe Lulis and Simone Wenzel as well ║ │
│║ as drummer Gerd Lⁿcking and from that moment on ║ │
│║ the power metal element seems to have taken on a ║ │
│║ downward trajectory in favour of an increased ║ │
│║ heavy metal influence. One main element, though, ║ │
│║ stayed the same throughout, Michael SeifertÆs ║ │
│║ vocals, which are mostly gravelly, even though ║ │
│║ he can sing, but at times chooses not to. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Straight mid tempo greets the metalhead on ║ │
│║ opener ôIrminsulö, together with SeifertÆs ║ │
│║ trademark gravelly approach to the vocal ║ │
│║ department. The traditional metal flows strong ║ │
│║ here, but with the exception of the chorus the ║ │
│║ vocals lack flexibility and rely too much on the ║ │
│║ gruffness than to allow the song to expand to ║ │
│║ its full potential. Unfortunately a well-meant ║ │
│║ attempt at storytelling hinders following ôGod ║ │
│║ of Mercyö more than it aids, with a very strong ║ │
│║ German accent that disrupts the flow of the ║ │
│║ introduction, and the song itself doesnÆt fare ║ │
│║ too much better, plodding along without any fire ║ │
│║ or atmosphere with only the chorus picking up ║ │
│║ the pieces somewhat, but it is definitely ║ │
│║ lacking. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ One canÆt shake the feeling that ever since Uwe ║ │
│║ Lulis left Rebellion, some of the fire left with ║ │
│║ him, since predecessor Arminius already had not ║ │
│║ been able to continue, where the Viking trilogy ║ │
│║ had left off, and it continues onto Wyrd bi≡ ful ║ │
│║ arµd û The History Of Saxons. There is no ║ │
│║ denying that a straight rocker such as ║ │
│║ ôSahsnotasö has its appeal and the slower, epic ║ │
│║ chorus evokes memories of former glories, ║ │
│║ straight ôRunes of Victoryö shows that ║ │
│║ simplicity can be more than less sometimes and ║ │
│║ ôThe Fall of Irminsulö is the maybe best track ║ │
│║ of the album with drive, an epic chorus and all, ║ │
│║ but many of the remaining tracks are lacking in ║ │
│║ one or the other department, such as ôHengistö, ║ │
│║ which has a good chorus, but has the rest fall ║ │
│║ off in comparison or ôSlave Religionö that ║ │
│║ doesnÆt catch fire at all. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ While not being a bad album by any means, Wyrd ║ │
│║ bi≡ ful arµd û The History Of Saxons maybe ║ │
│║ biggest impediment is their own past, against ║ │
│║ which they automatically will be measured. Good ║ │
│║ parts lack the spark and the inspiration of ║ │
│║ earlier works and SeifertÆs vocals seem less ║ │
│║ flexible than before as well. The historical ║ │
│║ part still is very well researched and realized, ║ │
│║ but musically the Germans really will have to be ║ │
│║ very careful not to get lost in the shuffle of ║ │
│║ bands vying for the spots in the forefront. ║ │
│║ Approach with caution and try to check out ║ │
│║ before blindly buying. ║ │
