Dedicated to the forest in the spring-time, this album consists almost entirely
of instrumental melodic pieces performed largely on acoustic guitar and
synthesiser. The orchestral strings certainly sound as if they come from
electronic keyboards and perhaps the woodwind tunes do too: their tone is warm
and smooth. Though divided into eight tracks, the entire work can be heard as
one piece as there is not much distinction between tracks and even the mood
tends to be much the same throughout: changes from one track to the next tend to
be in the details of the melodies and casual listeners may sense just slight
variations in the music.
Though the sole E.D.I.E.H. member's playing skills are good and have a light
touch, listeners need to pay quite a lot of attention to each and every track to
get the full benefit of hearing the album which in my mind defeats the purpose
of the recording as an immersive experience of contact with the natural world in
its renewed bloom and gentle vitality. If you allow yourself to be entranced by
the record, you can miss a lot of detail and tracks end up blending seamlessly
into one gentle undulating whole. The whole album might work better if it were
just one long track of variations, or if each track were completely different
from all the others and they all described a definite narrative trajectory with
the music building up to a climax and then a steady denouement.
While some individual tracks like "Grove of Ostara" and "Re-turning the Wheel of
Year" can be quite good and even a bit dark and slightly ambiguous in their
intent, the album suffers from a generic broad-brush approach: it lacks the
freshness and the sharp ambient zing that would come from direct experience with
nature in the spring. Listeners might expect to hear a variety of music ranging
from light and delicate to bubbly or even dark and threatening: music that
captures or tries to capture all the moods, good and bad and ugly, of nature
during the season of renewal and growth. I have the impression of the music
going round and round in circles with regard to mood, as if the artist has
exhausted all he has to offer in the way of atmospheric black folk music and is
forced to repeat himself. There is not much distinct atmosphere in the music
either. Emotion is lacking and I sense that the E.D.I.E.H. artist is unable to
convey the full majesty of spring in the forest because he has had limited
direct contact with the subject that makes up the theme of the recording.
