This is a thundering musical muscle, there's pounding drums,
working alongside undistorted guitars, and lightening riffs.
There's a clear sense of excitement and urgency about this UK
garage rock music. In fact it's totally engaging. Of the six
tracks featured on this EP 'Neon Lights' and 'Gamma Life' are
the strongest; although part of the problem arises when you
find it hard to really differentiate any of the six tracks
featured here; they're all dark and rhythmic rock outs.
Unfortunately no new ground is covered by the band, as it
sounds rather similar to material the Datsuns were pumping
out a few years ago. The band are however clearly charged û
and if they put half this energy into their stage performance
they should make a great live proposition.

As eponymous six track EPs go, 'The Mutts' fairly lives up to
the name. The fact that the absolute minimum of resources has
been wasted on the presentation of the CD only serves to
compliment the raw rough-and-readiness of the music on it.
Take away the inspirational influence of the legendary Mick
Jones and the infuriatingly excessive amount of hype enjoyed
by the Libertines, and are you left with a better band than
the Mutts? It is a tough call as far as I am concerned, but
it would be a bit harsh on the Mutts to place round their
necks the millstone of "good as the Libertines", considering
how the Libertines suffer from being unable to live up to
their own publicity. They certainly bear comparison
nevertheless.
There are six decent raunchy raucous rock'nÆ'roll songs here,
nothing too pretentious or over ambitious but at the same
time no disappointments or filler tracks. If I had to pick
out a single it would be 'Neon Lights', which has a bit of a
bluesy undertone to it, while still being good head-banging
fare.
Whilst it would be rather rash to tip the Mutts for fame,
fortune and whatever else, it is definitely fair to say that,
on the strength of this impressive offering, I am keen to
hear more of the band, particularly the acid test of how
their live show measures up. If it does, rest assured youÆll
be the first to know.
