│ │
│ Kate Earl spent all but one of her 22 years known as, ôthe girl │
│ who lives in the gas stationö in Chugiak, Alaska. │
│ │
│ Trading in the never-ending snowdrifts for HollywoodÆs endless │
│ traffic jams, Kate arrived in Los Angeles last year with nothing │
│ but her voice, her stories and her love of music. After being in │
│ LA for just a few months, she was signed by Record Collection │
│ (The Walkmen, Har Mar Superstar, John Frusciante). ôI had never │
│ met someone so vulnerable and yet so confident at the same │
│ time,ö says Record Collection President/Co-Chairman Jordan │
│ Tappis, ôIt was the strangest juxtaposition I had ever │
│ experienced. Her voice and songwriting made it an easy decision │
│ for me to bring her into the label, but it was her personality │
│ that really got me.ö │
│ │
│ Assimilating into LAÆs music community (a process that can │
│ easily make or break an artist) was especially difficult │
│ considering her sensitive disposition and the fact she has spent │
│ the better part of her life writing and singing her songs alone. │
│ After meeting with several producers, Tony Berg (Amiee Mann, X, │
│ The Replacements) was brought in to produce KateÆs first album. │
│ ôWe never thought that Tony would actually do it,ö says Tappis, │
│ ôbut he had the same reaction to Kate and her music that I did û │
│ he fell completely in love with her voice and her honesty.ö │
│ │
│ The upcoming collection of songs is autobiographical. Just as │
│ Kate carries the beauty and purity of the Alaskan wilderness │
│ with her, she also holds the long, dark, 40-below winters and │
│ the isolation that comes along with the never-ending nighttime. │
│ Growing up in Chugiak with her gruff American father and │
│ overbearing Pilipino immigrant mother, music was her escape. │
│ Listening to her parentÆs warped wartime records and her beloved │
│ Bjork, Kate found that writing linked her to a grand expansive │
│ world that seemed closer with each song. Free from the barrage │
│ of hyperactive media, her music grew with unaffected innocence │
│ and she developed an awkwardly unique structure all her own, │
│ thanks to her imagination and delicate sensibilities. │
│ │
│ Kate has been playing shows up and down the west coast, honing │
│ her skills and establishing herself as the kind of artist who │
│ leaves her heart on the stage. In her own words and with her own │
│ stunningly beautiful voice, Kate tells her storiesàstories that │
│ are full of love, faith, tragedy and the strength of the human │
│ spirit. │
│ │
│ │
│ not typical soup. this girl is local, I've seen her a few times, │
│ she's cool. maybe a little too close to fiona apple, but... │
│ │
│ fuck you, listen. │
