The story behind this album is one with all the power ofàwellàwar. Ypres was
commissioned by the In Flanders Fields World War One Museum in Ypres, Belgium in
2011 for the then new permanent exhibition that commemorated the centenary of
the great war. Ypres by Tindersticks literally soundtracks the experience of
losing lives.
Stuart Staple, TindersticksÆ core-member, composed this after having a couple of
days on-site at the museum, perusing the despair, discussing the history,
observing some of the many stories. In particular some of the German graves,
moved from their original settings to a site in Vladslo, were the most
affecting. Commissioned to colour the experience of the gallery goers, StaplesÆ
palette uses suitably dark tones; greys, bruised blues, lilacs and flashes of
brightness.
