│║ Description : ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Finally, 30 years after this legendary show was ║ │
│║ done, a promising DVD was released. I was ║ │
│║ expecting something special, particularly ║ │
│║ because I didnÆt have the chance to watch the ║ │
│║ original VHS tape. I thought it would be ║ │
│║ probably as good as the famous live album of the ║ │
│║ same title, which is, for many fans and music ║ │
│║ journalists, the greatest thing the Irish ║ │
│║ rockers ever did. This DVD captures the ║ │
│║ performance of Lizzy at the legendary Rainbow ║ │
│║ Theatre in 1977. The band was at their best, ║ │
│║ after they reached their biggest success and ║ │
│║ fame with unforgettable records like ôJailbreakö ║ │
│║ and ôBad Reputationö, with Brian Robertson still ║ │
│║ in the group before his expulsion. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The set-list features a bunch of classics, like ║ │
│║ The Boys Are Back In Town, Dancing In The ║ │
│║ Moonlight and Massacre, although some Lizzy ║ │
│║ anthems are missing (ôCowboy Songö, ôEmeraldö, ║ │
│║ etc.). The performance is decent, precise and ║ │
│║ professional. Both Gorham and Robbo sound pretty ║ │
│║ convincing, slightly inspired but far from ║ │
│║ extraordinary this time. DonÆt expect superior ║ │
│║ brilliance in the style of the double live ║ │
│║ album. I guess no studio tricks, traps and ║ │
│║ overdubs were used in this video. I canÆt say ║ │
│║ these versions on stage reach a higher level ║ │
│║ than the studio originals, not at all. Sometimes ║ │
│║ Lynott and co.Æs performance is rather generic, ║ │
│║ quite effective but not impressing; lacking ║ │
│║ grace and passion (specially Robbo doesnÆt sound ║ │
│║ very motivated). ThereÆs no spectacular ║ │
│║ alternative arrangements, lenghtier jams or ║ │
│║ improvisation here. As usual, Lizzy follow very ║ │
│║ strictlythe studio patterns without offering ║ │
│║ anything unpredictable. However, thereÆs some ║ │
│║ admirable moments, like the cool pickinÆ parts ║ │
│║ of Robbo on ôStill In Love With Youö, the classy ║ │
│║ saxophone parts of John Earle and the stunning ║ │
│║ charisma of Lynott during the whole show. The ║ │
│║ drum solo of Downey on ôSha La Laö is decent, ║ │
│║ not amazingly technical like other 70Æs rock ║ │
│║ drummers, rather short and easy. But his drum ║ │
│║ work, along with PhilÆs efficient bass lines ║ │
│║ define the rhythms ideally. And LynottÆs vocals ║ │
│║ are lacking some grace and modulation, they ║ │
│║ sound completely similar to the studio cuts ║ │
│║ without notable changes. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ What I dislike the most about this DVD is the ║ │
│║ short lenght of the main feature. In total, 11 ║ │
│║ songs and 51 minutes: too short to satisfy! ║ │
│║ Well, this reissue includes some extras: the ║ │
│║ Sight & Sound In Concert from 1983 and 4 poor ║ │
│║ cuts from the bandÆs appearance at the Top Of ║ │
│║ The Pops program. But what are those numbers ║ │
│║ doing in a DVD titled ôLive And Dangerousö? I ║ │
│║ mean, Sykes, Moore or Bell have nothing to do ║ │
│║ with LizzyÆs mid 70Æs period! IÆm afraid those ║ │
│║ extras are just fillers added to compensate the ║ │
│║ short lenght of the Rainbow Theatre show. ║ │
│║ Totally disappointing! The package and artwork ║ │
│║ is generic and dumb, along with the menu design. ║ │
│║ In fact, the same photo of the original audio CD ║ │
│║ cover has been used for this video as well. No ║ │
│║ creativity from the Universal producers. The ║ │
│║ image quality is not that good and clear, it ║ │
│║ seems it has been transferred directly from the ║ │
│║ VHS tape. Even if the DVD description says this ║ │
│║ material features ôpristinely restored visual ║ │
│║ clarityö (yeah, right!). The sound is supposed ║ │
│║ to be 5.1 digital surround sound, but IÆd say ║ │
│║ itÆs simply acceptable instead, sometimes ║ │
│║ unbalanced. And of course, itÆs obvious this is ║ │
│║ not a full concert recording. I mean, only some ║ │
│║ cuts of the show have been choosen and used, ║ │
│║ this is a compilation of the gig highlights, not ║ │
│║ the whole film. Easy to guess, because the band ║ │
│║ is already sweaty and exhausted in the first ║ │
│║ number...It could have been better, definitely. ║ │
│║ Is really that hard to release a decent live ║ │
│║ DVD? Universal producers donÆt seem to put much ║ │
│║ passion and attention on these kind of releases. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ In conclusion, rather forgettable deficient DVD ║ │
│║ that doesnÆt feature anything impressing nor ║ │
│║ remarkable. Recommended for Lizzy fans only and ║ │
│║ still much better than the abysmal 2CD + DVD ║ │
│║ deluxe edition, released in 2010, which is the ║ │
│║ same remaster from 1996 actually, with a DVD ║ │
│║ that includes the Rainbow Theatre show in ║ │
│║ horrible mono sound (Dear Universal producers, ║ │
│║ you canÆt do anything right!) Once again, ║ │
│║ something that could have been memorable turned ║ │
│║ into a big disappointment. ║ │
