█ I have never understood the very purport of splits █
█ as a type of record and I have always skipped them █
█ while listening to some bands' discographies. IÆd █
█ never have listened to this split as well unless a █
█ good friend of mine (the owner of MFL Records, █
█ where the album was released) strongly recommended █
█ to take a listen. Well, I must admit that he was █
█ absolutely right and I want to thank him a lot. █
█ A new split-album titled ôEscapismö by Abstract █
█ Spirit - Russian doom-metal authorities - and █
█ Ennui - Georgian up-and-coming doom duo û is a █
█ perfect unity of two individualities bonded by █
█ chains of tragedy and despair. The contrast █
█ between these two bands is very well felt and █
█ unfortunately this difference is emphasized with █
█ obvious differences in recording. Well, this flaw █
█ can be easily ignored as the material itself gets █
█ all your attention. Each band presented two tracks █
█ which were enough, indeed, just like blood for █
█ testing. █
█ Abstract Spirit proved themselves to be a truly █
█ self-contained metal act with their own views and █
█ rules and, if I dare to say so, one of the most █
█ significant and sophisticated bands in the Russian █
█ underground scene. The tracks, recorded for the █
█ split, slightly differ from what youÆve heard on █
█ previous AS records and this might be a real █
█ reason to treat ôEscapismö more carefully. Music █
█ which has always been drawn towards total darkness █
█ and despondency suddenly turns out to be more █
█ catatonic and less nervous, more meditative and █
█ less sinister. Solemn and tragic ôAn Ode to the █
█ GodÆs Foolö and dopey ôSchcizotericaö û two █
█ selected doom metal monoliths with catchy melodic █
█ patterns and strong atmosphere; these two tracks █
█ remain in the memory from the very first listen, █
█ which is obviously a good sign as the musiciansÆ █
█ efforts were not in vain. █
█ The other heroes of ôEscapismö û Georgian doom █
█ metal band with two full-length records and one █
█ split in their portfolio û Ennui stood their █
█ ground and presented two tracks in their specific █
█ manner. Generally speaking, music by Ennui stands █
█ out thanks to amazing and touching guitar melodies █
█ that are repeated during the compositions, turning █
█ tracks into original monologues. These tracks, █
█ ôWhere the Common Sense is Ruinedö and ôThe Day of █
█ Abandonmentö, are Ennui to the very roots; █
█ pathetic and vague, though very sincere and █
█ emotional. As I see it, Ennui is one of the most █
█ promising acts at the post-Soviet doom metal stage █
█ and are quite outstanding and captivating. █
█ All in all, ôEscapismö is an excellent album for █
█ those who want to get deeper into exotic doom █
█ metal stages and it places AS and Ennui in a very █
█ good light. I would definitely recommend the album █
█ to all doom metal genre adepts, as it contains █
█ beautiful and unique music. Talking about me, I █
█ became really interested in listening to some new █
█ songs by AS and Ennui right away, as ôEscapismö █
█ turned out to be a good teaser. I hope you would █
█ think the same, as it would be quite sad if such █
█ great music doesnÆt find its thankful listener. █
