Bert Jansch didn't do too well during the 80's. He had some
health problems and to make things worst his albums didn't sell
too well. Actually the whole Punk era was not good for him and
his fellow folk performers. But life is never too unfair and
Scotmen are stuborn people so, Sketches is the album that
helped folk to come to life once more.
Most Jansch's fans agree about this album: is the best thing he
did in years. It seems that Bert himslef had decided to start
the new ecade with renewed energies and he obviously achieved
that goal. He moved to germany and worked at Oungenweide's
Studio trying to recreate himself for the times to come.
He re-recorded some of his "hits" ("Needle of Death") and
offered in this album a bunch of new tracks, good enough to be
compared to the great songs he composed during the 60's and
70's
The Line up and Tech detalis are:
Bert Jansch (vocal, guitar, banjo, percussion); Peter Kirtley
(guitar, percussion, background vocals); Frank Wulff (alto
flute, percussion, rainstick); Steve Baker (harmonica); Danny
Thompson (upright bass, percussion, chimes); Steven Wulff
(percussion). Producers: Danny Thompson, Bert Jansch, Peter
Kirtley. Recorded at O-Ton/Ougenweide Studio, Hamburg, Germany
in 1990.
"Sketches" shows that real folk never dies. The fascination of
simplicity is eternal. A man (or woman) with a guitar and
things to say is something solid enough to stand against time.
Enjoy!
