riton [re-ton] also known as henry smithson, the blonde bombshell.
born in the year of our lord 1978, our henry started out playing
the back room at shindig in newcastle playing house when you could
play decent new house records all night (them were the days). a 4
year music technology course opened his eyes to "slightly weirder
beats" and a move to manchester and job amongst the funky delights
of the fat city record shop cemented his desire to make music.
his first release was communicated featured on the grand central
compilation, central heating 2. at about this time henry was
starting his own label, switch. one of the acts on his label,
hadyn ruffley of bamboo soul, later collaborated with henry on his
album with mesmerising effect
since then he has been busy crafting this journey through sound.
says henry; "the tunes i've been making are different from most
grand central releases because i've taken what they've been doing
and merged it with my influences from a more house-orientated
background. so some of the tracks are aimed more at the
dancefloor, but still with that quality jazzy edge that gc do."
a fine pair of riton's dancefloor 12"s have attracted positive
reactions from crowds and djs alike; andy wetherall, laurent
garnier and gilles petersen have all been known to enjoy his
records (take control / habib).
the face summed up his unique musical blend as "profoundly funky
sounds from spare bits of house, electronica, jazz r&b, garage and
god-knows-what-else" . the release of the album beats du jour has
only served to impress on people more that this boy?s style cannot
be pinned down and you ain?t heard nothing like it before.
the vinyl version contains a different track than the cdm version
which was already released.
