│║        Twenty-eight years and eleven full length albums        ║ │
│║        into their career, flagship Hellenic black metal        ║ │
│║        band Rotting Christ unleash Lucifer Over Athens,        ║ │
│║        their second live album. Founded in 1987 by             ║ │
│║        brothers Sakis and Themis Tolis along with Jim          ║ │
│║        Mutilator, also known for his work with                 ║ │
│║        Varathron, Rotting Christ was one of the first          ║ │
│║        Greek black metal bands and were the forerunners        ║ │
│║        of that classic, theatrical Hellenic sound.             ║ │
│║        While the band has morphed over the years, from         ║ │
│║        the raw sounds of Thy Mighty Contract to the            ║ │
│║        melodically sweeping, gothic charged A Dead Poem        ║ │
│║        to the Mediterranean folk-tinged extreme metal          ║ │
│║        of Aealo, theyÆve retained a sound that is              ║ │
│║        distinctive and gripping.                               ║ │

│║        Lucifer Over Athens was recorded on December 7th        ║ │
│║        and 8th in 2013, in front of their home city.           ║ │
│║        The final product brings two discs (or three            ║ │
│║        records depending on your poison) packed with           ║ │
│║        thirty one tracks spanning the bandÆs history.          ║ │
│║        While this isnÆt the bandÆs first live release,         ║ │
│║        it boasts the best track listing and performance        ║ │
│║        to date. At the time of the recording, the core         ║ │
│║        duo of Themis on drums and Sakis on guitar and          ║ │
│║        vocals were joined by guest musicians Vagelis           ║ │
│║        Karzis on bass and George Emmanuel on guitar,           ║ │
│║        who were promoted to full fledged band members a        ║ │
│║        short time later. The performances are stellar          ║ │
│║        and the audio quality is top notch, especially          ║ │
│║        so for a live album.                                    ║ │

│║        The band is able to play tracks traversing their        ║ │
│║        entire career while not coming across as a              ║ │
│║        jumbled, schizophrenic mess of different sounds.        ║ │
│║        Covering tracks from every full length, except          ║ │
│║        Khronos for some reason, Rotting Christ covers          ║ │
│║        each era with aplomb. The sweeping and majestic         ║ │
│║        atmospheres transfer well into a live setting,          ║ │
│║        as the band nails each track, from the bass             ║ │
│║        heavy plodding on ôEnuma Elishö to the superbly         ║ │
│║        harmonized melodies on ôSorrowful Farewellö to          ║ │
│║        the ethnic instrumentation amid chugging riffs          ║ │
│║        of ôDub sag ta keö. The only issue one could            ║ │
│║        take with the bandÆs choice of songs is the             ║ │
│║        unlikelihood that Rotting Christ will ever be           ║ │
│║        able to pack over two hours of top notch tracks         ║ │
│║        into a single gig. Lucifer Over Athens wonÆt win        ║ │
│║        the band any new fans, but it should have               ║ │
│║        devotees slathering in no time.                         ║ │
