    ██▌▄▀█     Far from the limelight enjoyed by Goldie, Photek has,     ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     with his first album, Modus Operandi, released in         ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     1997, introduced the notion of minimalism to drumÆn       ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     bass, until then more inclined to sonic effusions,        ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     taking the genre away from the dance floors. Three        ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     years on, Rupert Parkes comes back with Solaris, his      ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     second proper album.                                      ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     Moving away from his trademark dry jungle, Parkes         ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     embraces here totally different flavours. If the          ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     compositions are still minimalist, the influences are     ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     North American. Revisiting Chicago early acid house       ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     and techno, with the help of legend Robert Owen on        ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     Mine To Give and Can't Come Down, Parkes gives a          ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     whole new dimension to his work. Kicking off with the     ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     sound of a jet taking off, and a massive beat, the        ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     first half of Solaris exposes more intricate beats        ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     and uneasy contortions, the man refusing to               ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     compromise himself to a simple 4/4 beat, the only         ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     concession to drumÆn bass being the chaotic Infinity,     ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     dropped like a bomb amongst the rest. Then, Parkes        ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     slows down the pace, with the magnificent tech-house      ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     beat and peaceful energy of Solaris, reminiscent of       ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     Richard D James' Surfing On Sine Waves album, and         ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     sets the tone for the second half of the record, more     ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     peaceful. Simone Simone contribution to the introvert     ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     and surprisingly short Lost Blue Heaven, only             ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     disturbed by the same jet engine as heard on              ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     Terminus, is mesmerising. The paranoid Under The          ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     Palms closes the parade, with dark, eerie                 ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     multi-layered waves of electronic stings, leaving the     ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     listener with a feeling of discomfort.                    ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     With Solaris, not only Photek disconcerts and covers      ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     his previous tracks, but also broaden his horizon,        ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     and starts showing his true colours. Rupert Parkes is     ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     not a conventional musician, and Solaris is               ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     definitely not a conventional record. Expect the          ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     unexpected.                                               ░██▌▄▀
