Phil Cook is a North Carolina based musician with an impressive list of
collaborators and projects to his name having worked with the likes of Matthew E
White and Hiss Golden Messenger. His new record ôSouthland Missionö is a perfect
mix of all things good about Americana and rock n roll in general. You have the
lifting Crosby, Stills and Nash harmonies and the staccato jive of
Springsteen-esque Hammond organs alongside Duane Allman style electric slide and
with a no frills vocal delivery the music rolls. Look no further than tracks
such as æAinÆt it SweetÆ and æ1992Æ to feel like youÆre listening to a lost
classic from the 1970s.


What is more interesting about ôSouthland Missionö is the sense one gets that
Cook is not trying too hard to sound like anyone in particular and what he
actually has created is something of himself and intrinsically this is more
interesting. This is not simple imitation.
