BIO - Shadi Megallaa
If there was any notion that music is not a globally uniting
force, this DJ would prove it otherwise.
Born in Cairo, Egypt, this 24 yr old was raised in Abu
Dhabi, on the shores of the Persian Gulf.With not much
inspiration anywhere at hand, Shadi remembers that he "first
got introduced to electronic music when I was 14. when my
friend's older brother went to study in London and he'd
bring back tapes of Drum N Bass shows that he'd been to". A
couple of years later he came across a double cd entitled
'Northern Exposure' mixed by Dj's Sasha & John Digweed.
Shadi recalls "being blown away by the complexity of musical
layering" and that he finally became fully immersed in
playing music upon his move to Lawrence, Kansas in 1997. He
purchased a pair of decks at the age of 19 while studying
architecture at the University of Kansas.
"My musical influences generally included Bob Marley, Lee
'Scratch' Perry, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, George Clinton,
Depeche Mode, INXS, U2, BB King, Sade, and LTJ Bukem. Yet i
started spinning progressive then, before i moved to more
tribally stuff & tech house."
"Djs that have influenced me since then have been Sasha,
Digweed, Howells, Terry Francis, Grant Dell, Craig Richards,
Lee Burridge, Tyler Stadius, and the Chug boys: Ali Ajami.
Genie and Sari."
Shadi has now returned to the UAE to complete his degree
after having already played gigs in the USA, Egypt & France.
A regular resident at misdxb's 'Subsistence' & Ohm records'
'Mixology' events, he is the latest addition to Montreal's
FRiGiDsound music network.
Shadi is a musical ambassador attempting to push the sound
of tech-house as far as it will go. "My main focus other
than making & playing music lies in trying to educate the
people in this region about underground music and pushing
the tech house sound. Im trying to support other local Djs
and have also started the Vibrant Sounds messageboard to
push electronic music in the Middle East region, you can
visit it through the ezboard network"
Having already showcased his 'Less Is More' mix on Proton
Radio, Shadi is back as Gareth Cheshire's guest on Bonus
Beats.
For any of you who are unfamiliar, he explains: "I ideally
like to play long sets and cover the entire musical
spectrum. Starting with an ambient or downtempo vibe then
moving to minimal tech house with clicks and bleeps, and
gradually build it to quirky tech. Always staying groovy
before a final stretch of dirty and filthy breaks."
The future is very bright for this pro-active talent. Having
started his own productions in 2001, new material by Shadi
will surface very soon as he continues his focus on himself,
his aspiration to start his own record label and, more
importantly, his focus for UAE music scene in general.
