David Josephs
As David prepares to open for Max Graham and Grayarea at
Godskitchen NYC it dawns on him that he is truly on his way
to doing what he found he loves to do more than anything
elseΓÇö
play music, make people happy, forgot their worries and make
them dance.
In only a few short years David's career has begun to take
off and he attributes this to a very good work ethic which
in the beginning of his dj life included practicing for up
to five or six hours a day; David truly wanted to master
this "art form" that we call dj'in.
It seems he has come into his element, gaining some respect
from fellow dj's he looks up to such as Steve Porter who
made the comment "David's style is unique and funky" and
Desyn Masiello who made the comment about a mix David
recently did "great mix, fantastic taste in music, we need
more djs like this."
David incorporates many styles of house music these days,
ranging from funky Chicago house, soulful melodic house,
vocal, disco, rock induced house, electro, tech house, acid,
breaks and techno. "I pigeon holed myself when I first got
into the scene, only listening to the dark progressive that
Sasha and Digweed were caining at the time, but when I moved
to Chicago I got introduced to the funk and I havenΓÇÖt
turned back since."
David started his dj life in Madison, Wisconsin where was
attending college at the time. A small scene was building
out there and David luckily got to meet some very talented
djs at the local record store that let him practice during
store hours. His first gigs were small but it started
building on his experience behind the decks while many
others stayed in their bedroom practicing. During his time
in Madison David also met Marscruiser, a very talented
breaks and electro producer whom he got the chance to
produce alongside with. The formation of Barely There
Records and the production "ElementalElectrofunk" on top of
several other pieces of music all happened in a small space
in Madison, Wisconsin during this time with Marscruiser. But
David was not satisfied staying in the small city and a move
to Chicago happened in winter of 2002.
His first break was when he moved to Chicago and got to open
for Armin Van Buuren at Spundae-Chicago in front of a few
thousand people. "That was the most nerve-racking and
beautiful experience all in one. My first hour I was
petrified, but calmed down and by midnight the place was
rammed. I remember throwing on Xpander and seeing the place
erupt, a memory I will never misplace." David credits his
constant work ethic in making mixes and handed them out much
like James Zabiela and many of the other djs out there who
have made it. "It is all about exposure and knowing only you
can make it happen, not someone else."
In the fall of 2003 David moved back to his hometown of New
York City and like he thought, did not hit the ground
running. "There are so many talented djs in this city, the
competition is beyond fierce." But learning from his past,
David went out to many events, chatted with promoters and
other djs, made mixes and handed them out and things started
to work in his favor. David has already played most of the
small venues in the city by now including Flow, Sin Sin,
Orchard Bar, Bauhaus, Opium Den, Delft and Industry.
In the summer of 2004, with keeping up the connections to
his friends at Spundae, David got the chance to work and
play for the newly formed partnership of Spundae and
Godskitchen. Opening already for Darren Emerson, Max Graham
and Grayarea, David is now getting a chance to play in front
of thousands while also helping to create a truly
magnificent night in New York City nightlife again.
