   ▐███▌             imagining what he calls "a modern                 ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             approach" to chamber music. It's a                ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             theme on his upcoming album                       ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             "Chambers," a 12-track collection                 ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             that                                              ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             includes "Odessa." The piece                      ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             premieres today on Speakeasy.                     ▐███▌
   ▐███▌                                                               ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             Gonzales originally wrote "Odessa"                ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             for his "Re-Introduction Etudes"                  ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             project, a collection of 24                       ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             compositions for "lapsed and amateur              ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             pianists." On "Chambers," he pairs                ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             the piano etude with a violin motif               ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             that evokes an eastern European feel.             ▐███▌
   ▐███▌                                                               ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             "The etude part of the piece focuses              ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             on the use of a semitone µgrace                   ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             note,' in which the melody hinges on              ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             the first note having this spiky                  ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             ornament," Gonzales says by email. "A             ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             blue note in jazz is also a grace                 ▐███▌

   ▐███▌             instantly bend the pitch of a tone                ▐███▌

   ▐███▌             "I listened to a lot of Stevie Wonder             ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             and Prince growing up, and they                   ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             liberally use the pitch bend wheel to             ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             add expressivity to the sometimes                 ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             icy and distant synthesizer,"                     ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             Gonzales says. "I tried to translate              ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             this                                              ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             modern-day tool to the string of the              ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             violin, employing a long drawn-out                ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             glissando over a few seconds, right               ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             when the tear-jerking section comes               ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             in."                                              ▐███▌

   ▐███▌             The Canada native (born Jason Beck)               ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             began playing piano when he was 3,                ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             and later received classical training             ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             at McGill University, where he                    ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             began composing. After a stint with               ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             the Canadian band Son, his first                  ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             solo pop release was the 1999 dance               ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             single "Let's Groove Again." He                   ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             alternated between instrumental                   ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             albums and experimental pop (and rap)             ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             releases∙the jaunty "Never Stop" from             ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             his 2010 album "Ivory Tower" was                  ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             featured in ads for the original                  ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             iPad∙and landed gigs with Peaches,                ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             Jane                                              ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             Birkin and Feist, with whom he                    ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             collaborated on her 2003 breakthrough             ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             "Let It Die." More recently, Gonzales             ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             contributed to Daft Punk's "Random                ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             Access Memories" and Drake's "Nothing             ▐███▌
   ▐███▌             Was the Same," both in 2013.                      ▐███▌
