│║ ║ │
│║ The year of the culmination of the British ║ │
│║ movement was 1982, when most groups finally ║ │
│║ reached their own identity and sound. Venom ║ │
│║ could do no wrong and released another ║ │
│║ masterpiece, Black Metal, a truly solid ║ │
│║ successor to their iconic debut. The success of ║ │
│║ Welcome To Hell reduced their stress level and ║ │
│║ gave them more time in the studio, though the ║ │
│║ passion and brilliance remained intact, along ║ │
│║ with their underground essence, these guys ║ │
│║ wouldnÆt sell out. So this record clearly ║ │
│║ represents the splendor of the NWOBHM, which ║ │
│║ shortly afterwards would decline once that ║ │
│║ terrible Def Leppard record Pyromania was ║ │
│║ released, whose crushing success gave big record ║ │
│║ labels ideas about making cash from British ║ │
│║ metal bands. However, Cronos & co. would never ║ │
│║ betray their roots and genuine musical concept ║ │
│║ no matter how much success and popularity they ║ │
│║ were certainly gaining. Each song here proves ║ │
│║ their determination for making more honest ║ │
│║ ôpower metal, Venom metal, black metal, not ║ │
│║ heavy metal cos thatÆs for the chicksö. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ You can find a refreshing variety of cuts in ║ │
│║ this album, starting with more straight speed ║ │
│║ metal like ôHeavenÆs On Fireö or ôTeacherÆs ║ │
│║ Petö, which features a very notable classic rock ║ │
│║ & roll influence, even an unexpected bluesy ║ │
│║ break. ThatÆs an exception though, because ║ │
│║ ôCountess Bathoryö and ôTo Hell And Backö bring ║ │
│║ more of VenomÆs characteristic devastating ║ │
│║ riffing, much weightier and intense on those, ║ │
│║ along with very dynamic rhythms. As usual, those ║ │
│║ numbersÆ technical level stays humble and ║ │
│║ limited, denying intricate arrangements of ║ │
│║ complexity, yet admirably developed and ║ │
│║ constructed. The structures of tunes as ║ │
│║ ôSacrificeö or ôLeave Me In Hellö might not be ║ │
│║ specially diverse, they incorporate few breaks ║ │
│║ and riff variations obeying a direct methodology ║ │
│║ that works out coherently, giving lyrics bigger ║ │
│║ presence. The dark imagery and themes remain as ║ │
│║ inspired as before without getting tedious or ║ │
│║ predictable, ôDonÆt Burn The Witchö or ôRaise ║ │
│║ The Deadö for instance reflect the groupÆs ║ │
│║ lyrical creativity, presenting fascinating ║ │
│║ stories and climaxes that make an ideal ║ │
│║ combination with the violent rough sound. This ║ │
│║ frantic music wouldnÆt be the same if it talked ║ │
│║ about generic empty words, definitely. In fact, ║ │
│║ Cronos & co. are putting greater emphasis on ║ │
│║ speed and aggression, AbaddonÆs double bass-drum ║ │
│║ kicks are continuous, otherwise very loose, only ║ │
│║ in Newcastle you could hear such raw speed metal ║ │
│║ (remember Raven,Avenger and later Atomkraft and ║ │
│║ Tysondog). MantasÆ riffing is immense and ║ │
│║ massive as well, providing these titles of ║ │
│║ overwhelming energy and power, very sharp, ║ │
│║ well-executed and properly varied to achieve ║ │
│║ crucial continuity, yet never intentionally ║ │
│║ complex or ambitious, offering no incredible ║ │
│║ progression or introducing many tempo shifts and ║ │
│║ alternative sections. Simplicity is working out ║ │
│║ again, demonstrating these guys didnÆt need to ║ │
│║ be extraordinary musicians or virtuosos to make ║ │
│║ passionate music. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ So these tracks represent the remarkable talent ║ │
│║ and inspiration of Venom at their best, without ║ │
│║ showing a significant improvement or ║ │
│║ modification from their debut sound. Their ║ │
│║ patterns are the same, though that doesnÆt mean ║ │
│║ their music canÆt achieve notable variety in ║ │
│║ their own way. Actually each tune is particular, ║ │
│║ especially they tried something different for ║ │
│║ the claustrophobic atmosphere of ôBuried Aliveö, ║ │
│║ which is pure magic, as Cronos himself recalls: ║ │
│║ ôI didnÆt want BBC-type effects for the intro, ║ │
│║ with cabbages being cut up to sound like earth ║ │
│║ shoveled onto a coffin - I wanted the real ║ │
│║ thing. So, we brought in a cardboard box and ║ │
│║ used garden spades to throw the mud onto the ║ │
│║ box. And Keith Nichol, our engineer was ║ │
│║ brilliant about it.ö The contribution of the ║ │
│║ legendary NWOBHM producer was vital indeed to ║ │
│║ make that composition sound as they wanted, the ║ │
│║ whole engineering job makes Black Metal truly ║ │
│║ strong, dark and tight, no other Venom record ║ │
│║ sounds that good. They are also including ║ │
│║ certain humor and amusing explicit horny lyrics ║ │
│║ among all their sinister themes, as you can ║ │
│║ check on ôTeacherÆs Petö, proving their attitude ║ │
│║ hasnÆt gone soft, their music hasnÆt get more ║ │
│║ accessible either after success arrived as it ║ │
│║ happened with many of their peers. I must insist ║ │
│║ on the consistency of their sound, very pioneer ║ │
│║ and innovative, occasionally very thrashy, with ║ │
│║ all those MantasÆ huge low-tuned riffs revealing ║ │
│║ new possibilities and textures death metal would ║ │
│║ later further explore as well. Most titles are ║ │
│║ faster than anything you could hear by then in ║ │
│║ the whole metal scene, now including more ║ │
│║ convincing and better defined rhythms with ║ │
│║ AbaddonÆs notable technical improvement, yet ║ │
│║ obviously the music is still slightly chaotic ║ │
│║ and scruffy, generally more solid than previous ║ │
│║ attempts on other hand. Many music journalist ║ │
│║ and critics accused the band of being noisy and ║ │
│║ unprofessional, but the coherence of the songs ║ │
│║ speak for itself, it doesnÆt have to be clean ║ │
│║ and perfect to sound great, actually continuity ║ │
│║ isnÆt lacking, songs are very reasonably ║ │
│║ developed. The evident simplicity is what made ║ │
│║ this material so refreshing after all, giving it ║ │
│║ absolute aggression and attitude, contrary to ║ │
│║ the pompous mainstream rock standards. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ HereÆs another discharge of energetic violent ║ │
│║ metal by three metal punks from Newcastle, as ║ │
│║ they once referred to themselves. There is no ║ │
│║ incredible improvement or progression from the ║ │
│║ debut, the sound remains the same, lacking no ║ │
│║ grace or motivation though. Venom were one of ║ │
│║ those NWOBHM acts whose music was truly ║ │
│║ characteristic from the very first record, while ║ │
│║ it took 3 or 4 albums for some of their ║ │
│║ compatriots to define their identity. So Black ║ │
│║ Metal isnÆt musically superior or surprising, ║ │
│║ but it sure features some of the bandÆs most ║ │
│║ powerful unique anthems. A great record that ║ │
│║ preceded the sudden decadence and fall of the ║ │
│║ British movement the following year, fortunately ║ │
│║ Cronos & co. were one of the few that never sold ║ │
│║ out. ║ │
