│║ 2015 has been an extremely meh year for power ║ │
│║ metal (Aside from a handful of releases like ║ │
│║ Luca Turilli's Rhapsody, Mardelas, Angra, Kelly ║ │
│║ Simonz Blind Faith, Symphony X, Cage, Death ║ │
│║ Dealer, Cross Vein and a few others) however we ║ │
│║ have just found the savior of 2015 power metal! ║ │
│║ I haven't fanboyed over an album that wasn't ║ │
│║ Rhapsody, Galneryus or Versailles this much in ║ │
│║ quite some time. I can't even decide my favorite ║ │
│║ song on this album because every song is so damn ║ │
│║ good, there's just not a weak moment on the ║ │
│║ album at all, even the production is world class ║ │
│║ being done by Piet Sielck who is the best ║ │
│║ producer currently in the power metal scene. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ It starts out with a nice cinematic Intro piece ║ │
│║ that really sets the tone of the epicness you'll ║ │
│║ hear on the album. Next comes one of my favorite ║ │
│║ tracks and the first real song "The Battle of ║ │
│║ Bargor-Zun" From the moment that triumphant ║ │
│║ synth starts up you know this song is going to ║ │
│║ be an instant power metal classic. With it's ║ │
│║ pounding double bass drumming, speedy riffs, ║ │
│║ infectious, empowering chorus, shredding solos ║ │
│║ (Also a nice jazz fusion one) and theatrical ║ │
│║ vocals, makes it difficult to not fall in love ║ │
│║ with the song on first listen, hard to believe ║ │
│║ that's only the first real song too. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ I don't want to go into too much detail about ║ │
│║ each individual song, but basically the music is ║ │
│║ a combination of mainly symphonic power metal in ║ │
│║ the vein of Rhapsody ("The Battle of Bargor- ║ │
│║ Zun", "Legend of Valley Doom") and Avantasia ║ │
│║ ("Chamber of Wisdom"), with some more ║ │
│║ traditional heavy metal moments that are akin to ║ │
│║ Iron Maiden ("Haunting my Dreams"), also some ║ │
│║ traces of other bands like Running Wild ("Free ║ │
│║ as the Wind") and Blind Guardian ("Fallen ║ │
│║ Heroes") here and there. Featuring some of the ║ │
│║ greatest power metal musicians to ever live. ║ │
│║ Every single guest really gets to show off here, ║ │
│║ there's some super impressive guitar and key ║ │
│║ solos, all the vocalists are utilized perfectly ║ │
│║ and the drums and bass pound away non-stop ║ │
│║ reminding you that this is a power metal album. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The concept of the album is a high fantasy story ║ │
│║ that reminds me of Rhapsody or Dragonland, ║ │
│║ apparently it's going to be a trilogy and a book ║ │
│║ as well, so that's something to look forward to. ║ │
│║ All being narrated by Roger Watson's epic voice. ║ │
│║ The great thing about Valley Doom is these songs ║ │
│║ all fit together to form a killer concept album, ║ │
│║ at times the way each vocalist/character sings a ║ │
│║ line to each other, has a very musical theater ║ │
│║ feel to it and helps sell the concept even more, ║ │
│║ but most songs are still capable of standing on ║ │
│║ their own at the same time. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ A few more points of interest of the ║ │
│║ album...It's particularly nice to hear Ripper ║ │
│║ singing on "Prophecy of the Warrior King" ║ │
│║ because even though he's known for his wailing ║ │
│║ ability, he's a super underrated singer and ║ │
│║ nailed that song (Including the wails of course) ║ │
│║ although Mark Boals actually has the greatest ║ │
│║ metal wail on the album, which you can hear in ║ │
│║ the song "Raise Your Shields", also the intro ║ │
│║ riff of that same song always reminds me of the ║ │
│║ Mighty Morphin Power Rangers theme song. The ║ │
│║ main riff to "Lost in a Dream" sounds like it ║ │
│║ came directly from the 80s. "Free as the Wind" ║ │
│║ could very well be the most happy sounding song ║ │
│║ I've heard since the first time I heard a ║ │
│║ Freedom Call song. The throat singing on the ║ │
│║ "Outro" piece has to be one of the most unique ║ │
│║ ways I've ever heard an album end. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ This all-star cast of musicians is the best I've ║ │
│║ ever seen in any metal opera project and all in ║ │
│║ all, I'm comfortable enough to say that Marius ║ │
│║ Danielsen didn't just create one of the best ║ │
│║ power metal albums of 2015, but one of the best ║ │
│║ power metal albums I've ever heard in general. ║ │
│║ This is an album that I truly believe will stand ║ │
│║ the test of time and in 20 years from now will ║ │
│║ be regarded as much of a power metal classic as ║ │
│║ Avantasia's Metal Opera. If you're a power metal ║ │
│║ fan and haven't heard it yet, what the Hell are ║ │
│║ you waiting for?! ║ │
