Have you wondered how to make Hard Rock and Metal mixes sound
heavy, while still retaining clarity? In this video tutorial
series Brock Jon takes a professionally mixed and produced song
and deconstructs it, showing you every element in the song and
how they each contribute to the overall sound and energy of the
     mix.

     About the author Brock Jon:

Brock Jon 1. When did you start dabbling in music? At age nine,
I turned on MTV and saw Yngwie Malmsteen playing. I was hooked!
I immediately started learning guitar. A couple of years later,
I started drums. When I was 16 and deeply mired in a Dream
Theater Or It Sucks phase, I was selected from over 200
outstanding musicians and awarded a scholarship from Berklee
College of Music, where I eventually studied for a couple of
years. Eventually I happened upon Mike Keneally’s music and it,
among other things, opened me up to how big and amazing the
world of music is. I also love playing bass and keyboards. 2.
What training have you had? My first guitar teacher was Phil
Marcus. As my technique expanded, he suggested I find another
teacher who could teach me how to play the stuff I wanted to
learn (Yngwie/shred). I lucked into finding Robbie Bachman, a
recent GIT grad who lived and breathed shredding. Under his
tutelage, my technique grew leaps and bounds. For drums, being
very into drum corp style of snare playing, I had the good
fortune of studying under Tom Float and Dave Dillulo of Blue
Devils fame. At Berklee, I studied guitar under Jon Finn, Mashi
Hasu, Jim Kelly, and harmony under Mike Scott 3. When did you
get into recording? My first recording experience was with my
prog-metal band from my high school years, Mindscape. From there
I became avidly interested in recording and did so any time I
could get ahold of the requisite gear. Fueled by my passion for
composition, this fervor never subsided. I started recording on
computers while at Berklee (in 1996 on Studio Vision Pro), and
moved on to Cakewalk, and then Cubase VST. I’ve stuck with
Cubase since, however I’m also versed in Logic and Studio One.
     4. People you have worked with/for? I’ve worked with a lot of
wonderful musicians, producers and engineers, and folks from the
business side of the music world. I’m presently working on an
album with fellow Groove3 author and good friend, Scott Fritz.
Professionally, I’ve done work for Steinberg, Toontrack,
FabFilter, Softube, Universal Audio, 2CAudio, and others. 5. Why
are you so good at training people? My folks were career-long
teachers. I think it helped me become aware of the fact there’s
more to teaching than merely knowing the subject matter. Knowing
how to convey the material is often as, if not more, important.
Case in point: the archetypal guitar teacher — he can play
anything under the sun, but has no idea how to structure a
program to help his students develop as players and musicians.
As a guitar instructor I developed a program and constantly
tweaked it based on the results I saw. This dynamic development
process eventually resulted in a highly effective system that
produced outstanding results. I’ve carried this same approach
into the work I presently do. I truly love doing work where I
can help people grow and achieve their personal goals.
