Moth Park / Soundtracks to Utopia pursues some rarely explored
ideas about what is possible in a solo guitar performance. The
two performances on this CD, which were recorded in a concert
where Roberts opened for the revolutionary minimalist Tony
Conrad, present the guitar as a sound generator.
The New Zealander's approach to the instrument is informed by
genius improvisors like Jim O'Rourke and AMM's Keith Rowe, men
who never let their prodigious instrumental skills get in the
way of their music. Like them Roberts uses various devices and
preparations to get sustained sounds out of the instruments,
but goes even farther than they have in letting the instrument
play itself.
Roberts typically brings two guitars on stage; he will set an
e-bow upon the neck of one, making its strings vibrate, while
he strikes, shakes, or drags the other instrument around. In
his hands a guitar can sound like a set of tuned bells or the
amplified sounds of metal itself being twisted and stretched.
This description might sound violent, but the sonic results are
really quite meditational; Roberts lets sounds develop at their
own pace, the better for us to savor their slow evolution.
