│ 1) Hails Gunther!! How are things? Lion's Pride is a brand new name │
│ in the scene so maybe we could kick this off by informing the │
│ readers of the PrideÆs history? │
│ │
│ LIONÆS PRIDE was formed in May 2000 rising out of the ashes of │
│ DIVISION 99. The moment a steady line-up was achieved the band │
│ decided to continue working under the name of LIONÆS PRIDE. The name │
│ refers to the medieval Flemish banner and the Skinhead spirit/way of │
│ life. Some of the band members are veterans in the scene and have │
│ been active in various bands (and still are). In fact it is a │
│ misconception to regard us as a brand new upcoming band as we have │
│ existed for several years and the debut album was recorded in │
│ November/January 2002/2003. But this idea is understandable as we │
│ did not go public sooner and also the release of the album was │
│ delayed. │
│ │
│ 2) It took quite a while before the album got released; I recall │
│ already quite some years there was talk about the release of an LP. │
│ How come it took so long? │
│ │
│ Indeed. Soon after the recording of the album, which took a few │
│ years of preparation as well, a line up change took place. Not a │
│ very ideal moment but it was a situation beyond our control. It was │
│ not easy to find two new band members with the technical skill and │
│ dedication we required. By the time we were ready to hit the stage │
│ with the new line up PURE IMPACT had (understandably) scheduled │
│ other releases first, which caused another few months of delay. │
│ There were even rumours circulating the band has ceased to exist but │
│ nothing of the kind. Sometimes MurphyÆs Law simply works against you │
│ but what does not kill you makes you stronger. I never had any │
│ doubts. Besides, IÆm a patient and stubborn person: if everything │
│ fails today I simply carry on making it work tomorrow. │
│ │
│ 3) You present the band as being an oi-band but judging from the │
│ topics listed in the lyrics one can't but notice there's also a more │
│ nationalistic undertone to it. Doesn't it pose any problem towards │
│ the label (which is more oi-oriented)? │
│ │
│ We are undeniably a Patriot/Nationalist band. We are considered │
│ politically incorrect, as well. A label we proudly wear. I realise │
│ our music is quite difficult to label, next to Oi! One can detect │
│ RockÆn Roll, Hardcore, StreetPunk and Metal influences. There are │
│ many people out there who like our work "except for the lyrics". │
│ Modern society brainwashes the masses and many find it difficult to │
│ deal with a band who suddenly confront them with harsh every day │
│ reality situations. They prefer plastic Punk pseudo revolutionary │
│ MTV lyrics. Pop stars posing like rebels who cash in millions of │
│ capitalist Dollars from a system they claim to fight, too hypocrite │
│ for my taste. I cannot pretend. Why write lyrics about how perfect │
│ this multicultural society works and that this world is a place of │
│ harmony when I witness complete opposite facts? I do not claim │
│ superiority over others but the fact remains that when opposite │
│ cultures and religions are placed on a small piece of ground │
│ together culture clashes are bound to happen. Sad but true. My heart │
│ bleeds when I see what is happening to our ancient lands. │
│ Politicians and media are blinding the masses who embrace the very │
│ same powers that have sworn our downfall. In these times of │
│ politically correct dictatorship it is considered suspicious when │
│ one tries to save what remains of the own heritage and culture. I │
│ know this approach is not the ideal way to boost my career but so be │
│ it. I always speak my mind. PURE IMPACT are an honest veteran label │
│ and the owner who I know for many years holds patriot views as well, │
│ he has no problem with our approach. │
│ │
│ 4) One of the highlights of the cd is without a doubt '11th of │
│ juli'. I remember you once being asked in an interview with A.R. │
│ when you guys would do a metalversion of the Flemish anthem and you │
│ replied something like: "That is not really for us to do I think". │
│ What made you change your mind? │
│ I recall that question. In fact I did not change my mind. What the │
│ interviewer had in mind was playing the melody of the Flemish anthem │
│ speeding it up and making it Metal. At least thatÆs how I understood │
│ it. I found that a too easy and rather cheesy approach. What we did │
│ with the "11th of July" track was creating our own melody; we only │
│ adopted the lyrics of the ancient anthem. Consider it as our modern │
│ tribute to the old hymn. It has a slight Folky touch to create a │
│ link with the past but the music is completely different. Do not │
│ misunderstand: the Flemish National Hymn I do respect but I respect │
│ it too much to simply play it in a Punk or Metal way. We felt like │
│ doing more and present our ancient anthem in a "seductive" modern │
│ way so that many young people finally would get to know the lyrics │
│ next time they attend a Flemish Nationalist meeting or hear the │
│ original hymn somewhere. │
│ │
│ 5) You are the front man of Flanders leading Black metal band │
│ Ancient Rites, the rest of the band and former members aren't really │
│ disgusted by metal neither. Is it safe to say that the love for │
│ metal can clearly be heard in the music of Lion's Pride? │
│ │
│ It is not intentional but I guess one always carries influences from │
│ the musical experiences one has. Our music is straight forward, no │
│ nonsense and there our work fits in the Oi! scene but with room for │
│ melody and performed with the discipline and power of Metal. Many │
│ Skinheads who donÆt relate to Metal appreciate LIONÆS PRIDE and many │
│ Metalheads who are not into Oi! RockÆn Roll, Punk or Hardcore find │
│ LIONÆS PRIDE appealing. Somehow unintentionally a crossover is │
│ achieved. │
│ │
│ 6) You played your first 2 concerts in respectively the Kastelein in │
│ Brugge and for B&H Vlaanderen on the ISD Memorial 2004. How do you │
│ look back on it? │
│ │
│ Nice experiences. De Kastelein after all is a legend in the Oi! │
│ Circuit and it was an honour to play on the re-opening night. Many │
│ supportive people present. The ISD memorial was a perfect │
│ opportunity to honour a man whose work I already got in touch with │
│ in back 1978 when obtaining "All Skrewed Up" on vinyl. It also was a │
│ chance to present LIONÆS PRIDE to a huge crowd and to finally share │
│ the stage with WARLORD and my old mate Stigger. │
│ │
│ 7) Flanders (and Belgium in it's totality) doesn't count many Oi/RAC │
│ bands but in my honest opinion Lion's Pride just catapulted itself │
│ to the top of the scene over here! How do you look upon the local │
│ scene? Any favourites? │
│ │
│ Thank you for your kind words. We get along with most bands very │
│ fine. Bass player Luc of HEADCASE plays together with Rony and me in │
│ Heavy Metal band IRON CLAD. We know several people of CONVICTED, │
│ STORMWOLF, THUGGERS and LES VILAINS. The scene is quite activeà │
