│║ In the quiet period between Ironsword's last ║ │
│║ effort Overlords of Chaos and their new slab of ║ │
│║ barbaric epic metal None But the Brave, it seems ║ │
│║ precious little has changed. Ironsword have ║ │
│║ already cemented themselves as one of the ║ │
│║ foremost names in the Mediterranean scene (even ║ │
│║ though Portugal isn't even on the Mediterranean ║ │
│║ Sea), and their newest statement is exactly what ║ │
│║ their name and album art would suggest: a ║ │
│║ primitive collection of hymns glorifying battle ║ │
│║ and barbarism. The work as a whole is solid, but ║ │
│║ it leaves the listener with the impression that ║ │
│║ what it does had been done before, and done ║ │
│║ better, both by Ironsword themselves and by a ║ │
│║ certain legendary Kansas outfit. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The epic metal scene centered around Italy, ║ │
│║ Greece, and Iberia seems to exist for the sole ║ │
│║ purpose of aping Manilla Road, and that's ║ │
│║ exactly the draw of these bands, taking a well- ║ │
│║ loved formula and beating it to death in a very ║ │
│║ welcome and enjoyable fashion. Tann and company ║ │
│║ fall perfectly in line with the Manilla Road ║ │
│║ model here, recalling what made Crystal Logic ║ │
│║ and Open The Gates great with riffs aplenty, a ║ │
│║ gravelly vocal approach, and a focus on creating ║ │
│║ an epic atmosphere without straying from simple, ║ │
│║ but effective musical ideas. So strong is the ║ │
│║ resemblance at times that parts seem lifted from ║ │
│║ the aforementioned classics. Can any but the ║ │
│║ least-discerning listeners not be taken back to ║ │
│║ The Ram from Crystal Logic upon hearing the ║ │
│║ beginning of Calm Before the Storm? I even had ║ │
│║ to check to make sure The Shark himself didn't ║ │
│║ make a guest appearance in the chorus on ║ │
│║ Vengeance Will Be Mine. None But the Brave is an ║ │
│║ entertaining listen anyways, but the feeling ║ │
│║ that this story has been told before cannot be ║ │
│║ shaken. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Overall the album is a song-oriented affair ║ │
│║ consisting of short, chorus-driven numbers. ║ │
│║ Ironsword bring no surprises -- no grandiose ║ │
│║ epics, interludes, or anything of the sort, with ║ │
│║ every song falling between two and six minutes ║ │
│║ and following the same general pattern. This is ║ │
│║ to the album's detriment, as while the songs ║ │
│║ themselves may be fine as works on their own, ║ │
│║ they run into each other over the course of the ║ │
│║ album. The listener will likely either lose ║ │
│║ track of where he is in the album (in which case ║ │
│║ waiting until the chorus appears again will ║ │
│║ rectify that) or find the tried-and-true Manilla ║ │
│║ Road formula too compelling to care. Variety is ║ │
│║ not the focus at all here, and Ironsword instead ║ │
│║ produce consistently enjoyable recollections of ║ │
│║ a time when steel ruled, if too consistently. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ One look at the cover of None But the Brave ║ │
│║ gives even a casual observer a good idea of what ║ │
│║ is to be found inside. Ironsword are barbarians ║ │
│║ in as true a sense as is possible in music, late ║ │
│║ to the game by two decades but too busy slaying ║ │
│║ everything in sight to care. The music reflects ║ │
│║ that, carrying on the spirit of classic Manilla ║ │
│║ Road in perhaps slightly too obvious a fashion. ║ │
│║ This latest effort is fun, catchy, and succeeds ║ │
│║ in recalling what has made Ironsword the force ║ │
│║ that they are, but it does not top Overlords of ║ │
│║ Chaos, let alone the great Manilla Road albums. ║ │
