▐█ RELEASE NOTES: ▐█▌
▐█ █▌
▐█ Dusk is settling over Ventura, and the bearded brethren in █▌
▐█ Franklin For Shortùsinger-guitarist Seth Petterson, 20, and █▌
▐█ bassist Trevor Beld, 21ùare sitting on a couch in BeldÆs █▌
▐█ motherÆs modestly well-kept living room. (The third member of █▌
▐█ the trio, clean-shaven drummer Victor Fuentes, is stranded █▌
▐█ somewhere in Riverside.) Maybe itÆs just their thick facial █▌
▐█ hair, but the two longtime friends appear much older than they █▌
▐█ actually are. The long-legged Beld, with his rope necklaces and █▌
▐█ quasi-bell-bottoms, looks not unlike a woodsier version of █▌
▐█ Shaggy from Scooby Doo. Petterson has a boyish face, but he █▌
▐█ speaks about music with the reverent mysticism of an ex-flower █▌
▐█ child. ôSongwriting has a lot of energy to it, so sometimes itÆs █▌
▐█ hard to know where that energy is coming from,ö he muses. ôItÆs █▌
▐█ almost like a mantra after a while.ö █▌
▐█ █▌
▐█ A similarly aged spirit also permeates their songs: strikingly █▌
▐█ simple, wonderfully melodic, borderline folk tunes, influenced █▌
▐█ primarily by 60s artists like Paul Simon, the Beatles and Patsy █▌
▐█ Clineùstuff that could likely be in their parentsÆ record █▌
▐█ collections. ItÆs a far cry from the amped-up power-pop anthems █▌
▐█ of their previous band, Bad Judgment, and that seems to be the █▌
▐█ point. While neither expresses any regrets about their years █▌
▐█ spent in the locally popular quartet, both describe the groupÆs █▌
▐█ waning days as a creative prison. █▌
▐█ █▌
▐█ ôWe felt like we were getting chased around by the old songs,ö █▌
▐█ says Petterson, who played drums in the now-defunct outfit. ôWe █▌
▐█ kind of felt trapped. Our record never came out and we kept █▌
▐█ getting word that it was going to come out, so weÆd have to █▌
▐█ promote it and still play the same old songs.ö █▌
▐█ █▌
▐█ Beld, formerly the frontman, agrees: ôWe were in a situation █▌
▐█ where we were stuck with Bad Judgment but we were still growing █▌
▐█ musically.ö █▌
▐█ █▌
▐█ Franklin For Short provided Petterson and Beld with an outlet █▌
▐█ for their rapidly maturing songwriting, but they never intended █▌
▐█ their acoustic collaborations to evolve into anything serious. █▌
▐█ In March 2002, the duo, who met in high school and wrote a song █▌
▐█ together the first time they hung out, self-recorded a dozen █▌
▐█ spare, drum-less tracksùnudged toward alt-country by PettersonÆs █▌
▐█ nasal twang and confessional lyricsùand started hitting up open █▌
▐█ mikes around town. One early fan was Victor Fuentes, the █▌
▐█ high-velocity drummer for local punk vets the Missing 23rd, who █▌
▐█ saw them perform while serving drinks at the Garden Village █▌
▐█ CafΘ. He was ôblown awayö and offered his services behind the █▌
▐█ kit. ôI wanted to do something that was mellow, something that █▌
▐█ you could just chill out to, something different,ö Fuentes █▌
▐█ explains later over the phone. ôI was totally up for something █▌
▐█ new. I donÆt fear change, I welcome it.ö Suddenly, what began as █▌
▐█ just a few solo demos on a tape had blossomed into a █▌
▐█ full-fledged band, and a sort of moderate supergroup at that; by █▌
▐█ the end of summer, they were putting the finishing touches on █▌
▐█ their official debut, the Wildcat EP, and playing live nearly as █▌
▐█ often as their main projects. █▌
▐█ █▌
▐█ Meanwhile, Bad Judgment had entered a seemingly endless █▌
▐█ recording process that was stretching into its second year. As █▌
▐█ frustration over delays and setbacks mounted, Franklin steadily █▌
▐█ gained in importance for Petterson and Beld. Soon, the pair █▌
▐█ began to feel like they were having an affair behind their █▌
▐█ bandmatesÆ backs. ôDuring our time with Bad Judgment, and when █▌
▐█ Victor was with Missing 23rd, we always referred to this as our █▌
▐█ æmistressÆ because there were times when weÆd have toàsneak it █▌
▐█ around, jamming after practice,ö Petterson says. ôAfter being in █▌
▐█ a band for so long, doing the same thing, practicing for the █▌
▐█ show, it was kind of like recess from that.ö █▌
▐█ █▌
▐█ In September 2003, with their album no closer to seeing the █▌
▐█ light of day, Bad Judgment mutually decided to split up after █▌
▐█ seven years. FranklinÆs transition from side project to top █▌
▐█ priority was a smooth one: The band had already begun working on █▌
▐█ its first full-length as a three-piece, In the Dark, with their █▌
▐█ friend Chris Larsen, who issued the record through his small █▌
▐█ Stereo Tyke label in March 2004. True to its title, the album █▌
▐█ has a darker tone than the previous EPùthe result of the late █▌
▐█ night sessions that produced itùand a greater sense of tension █▌
▐█ on slow-burning songs like ôBirds Sing Lowö: ôThere was a change █▌
▐█ in the air and the wind that blows/And the birds sing low their █▌
▐█ cries of woe.ö In contrast to the overwrought process of the █▌
▐█ scrapped Bad Judgment record, the band took a kitchen sink █▌
▐█ approach to In the Dark. █▌
▐█ █▌
▐█ ôFor that record, we had 12 songs at the time, and we just █▌
▐█ recorded them all,ö Petterson says. ôWe took some shit that most █▌
▐█ people probably wouldnÆt even put on a record; like thereÆs one █▌
▐█ track of just a guitar and five guys singing in a room, the same █▌
▐█ thing over and over. And to us, weÆre like, æYep, thatÆs going █▌
▐█ on the record.Æö █▌
▐█ █▌
▐█ One month after In the DarkÆs release, the trio headed north to █▌
▐█ San Francisco to record yet another album at indie rock bigwig █▌
▐█ John VandersliceÆs semi-famous Tiny Telephone Studios. Whereas █▌
▐█ In the Dark took nearly a year to complete, Lovesick Mistress █▌
▐█ (the title is partially a reference to the adulterous █▌
▐█ relationship the band had with Franklin For Short while still █▌
▐█ married to Bad Judgment), to be released on Blackbird Music on █▌
▐█ August 24, was finished in four days, and it may be their best █▌
▐█ effort to date. The band perfects its jangly minimalism on █▌
▐█ upbeat numbers like ôElated That You Careö and ôThe Human █▌
▐█ Disease,ö and reaches stirring levels of emotional honesty on ôA █▌
▐█ New Heart.ö Petterson says many of the songs are directly █▌
▐█ inspired by the bandÆs family and friends, most obviously on █▌
▐█ ôQuiet Beach Town,ö a tribute to the city ôwhere the children █▌
▐█ dress in black.ö █▌
▐█ █▌
▐█ ôIÆve always thought of Franklin For Short as a family band,ö he █▌
▐█ says. ôThe other music we were playing, our closer family █▌
▐█ members didnÆt necessarily support it that much. When we started █▌
▐█ doing this one, it seemed like my family, and I think [TrevorÆs] █▌
▐█ family, they just kind of got it.ö █▌
▐█ █▌
▐█ ôThey supported it more because we were happier,ö Beld adds with █▌
▐█ a smile. █▌
