█ Arbor Ira is a death/doom band hailing from █
█ Germany. ôMeine Traume, Vergangeneàö is the bandÆs █
█ 2nd full length release and contains a healthy █
█ dose of melodic/progressive death metal and doom. █
█ The album title roughly translates to English as █
█ ôMy Dreams, Pastö û thank you very much Google █
█ translator. The music will most likely appeal to █
█ fans of My Dying Bride, older Anathema, and █
█ Swallow the Sun. One thing to note is that a lot █
█ of the lyrics are in German so those of us that █
█ donÆt speak the language will miss out slightly. █
█ Oh, while I have Google Translate open and in case █
█ youÆre wondering, the name of the band loosely █
█ translates from Latin as ôThe Wrath of a Treeö █
█ If you donÆt mind the German lyrics you will be █
█ rewarded with some very solid death/doom. █
█ Lyrically the focus is on nature and the misery of █
█ life. The band uses several vocal styles █
█ throughout the album including death growls, black █
█ metal growls/screams, spoken word, clean singing █
█ and a sort of half sung, half spoken word mix. The █
█ spoken word reminds me a lot of Aaron Stainthorpe █
█ of My Dying Bride while some of the clean singing █
█ reminds me at times of Fernando Ribeiro of █
█ Moonspell. Regardless of the vocal style being █
█ used, they are performed well and Arbor Ira does a █
█ great job of mixing all the styles to maximize the █
█ feeling and atmosphere of each song. █
█ Musically the songs always maintain a certain █
█ degree of heaviness. This comes through with the █
█ use of thick palm muted guitars which go between █
█ steady rythmic strumming to faster, catchier █
█ Gothenburg style riffing and melodies. Think My █
█ Dying Bride meets Dark Tranquility or old school █
█ death metal meets Gothenburg melodic death metal █
█ and sprinkled with a healthy helping of gothic █
█ doom. The lead provides much of the melody with █
█ sorrowful, yet interesting harmonies and there is █
█ even a few small guitar solos to be found █
█ throughout the album. The drumming on the album is █
█ excellent and uses a lot of variation in patterns █
█ and tempos to keep everything interesting. Arbor █
█ IraÆs influences are ever present on this album █
█ and shine through in different aspects throughout █
█ with each song picking from the abundance of █
█ influences to create a slightly different vibe. █
█ Though I do enjoy the heavier aspect of Arbor █
█ IraÆs music I find one of their real strengths █
█ comes through in the form of the softer melodic █
█ interludes. The two guitars playing sweet, █
█ melancholic harmonies with the bass and drums █
█ providing complimentary rhythms. Atmospheric █
█ elements are minimal on this album with violins █
█ appearing only in small doses on a couple of █
█ tracks. The need for these atmospheric elements is █
█ lessened by the passionate vocal performance which █
█ creates a multitude of feelings with itÆs varying █
█ styles and moods. █
█ Highlights of the album include ôPlatz Der Sorgenö █
█ with itÆs catchy rhythm and vocals, ôHere I Wait █
█ For Youö with itÆs excellent blend of heaviness █
█ and softer melodies, the 13 minute ôGiftö which █
█ has an arsenal of melodious riffing and a very █
█ inspired vocal performance, and the last track █
█ ôEvery Dayö which has a very memorable chorus. █
█ Overall Arbor Ira have themselves a very solid █
█ album with ôMeine Traume, Vergangeneàô. The album █
█ has good production, the music is performed well █
█ and the songs are interesting. While at times the █
█ music sounds a lot like the bandÆs influences it █
█ still manages to invoke enough interest and █
█ creativity to come into itÆs own. The band is █
█ currently working on a new EP to be released █
█ through Naturmacht Productions. As a big fan of █
█ doom metal and in particular death/doom I am █
█ eagerly awaiting this release. The band have said █
█ that the new songs are a big step forward in █
█ development and skills and IÆm interested to see █
█ how the band has further developed their sound. █
█ Death/doom is a flooded genre, as are most these █
█ days, with so many bands bringing nothing new to █
█ the table. Going forward, I would like to see █
█ Arbor Ira do more to distinguish themselves from █
█ the vast array of similar sounding bands. The have █
█ proven that they have the potential and skill set █
█ to do it so. Now itÆs time to step up their game. █
