Featuring Ivo Perelman tenor saxophone, Dominic Duval bass,
Jackson Krall drums. Over the past few years Brazilian free-
jazz tenor sax giant, Ivo Perelman, has been concentrating on
his painting career and has been doing a grand job. After some
20 releases on labels like Leo and CIMP, Ivo has finally slowed
down a bit and only has one new offering in the past year, that
amazing double trio, double CD on Boxholder. This fabulous
studio date was actually recorded before that one in March of
2001 and Ivo again uses his main rhythm team of Dominic Duval
and Jackson Krall (was Jay Rosen out of town?). Beginning
slowly, this trio builds to a frenzy pretty quickly with some
heavy tenor sax blasting, propulsive contrabass and rip-roaring
drums. Strong and highly intense interaction and mostly
exciting throughout.

AMG Review (4/5 stars):
Ivo Perelman has a ferocious tone on tenor-sax and often
indulges in exploration of the extreme upper register of his
horn. Although his interplay with bassist Dominic Duval and
drummer Jackson Krall on Black On White is mostly quite free,
there are lyrical sections and Perelman shows that occasionally
he does not mind caressing melodies. The mood variation is very
important in this music because otherwise it would be
unremittingly intense. It also shows another side to Perelman's
musical personality, allows him to contrast violence with
warmth, and keeps the music from being entirely high-energy.
Ivo Perelman has recorded many CDs during the past decade and
this one should satisfy his fans. --Scott Yanow
