"pieces of winter by john hudak and stephan mathieu" is based
on one composition by each of the two sound artists originally
made for a small personal edition as season greetings for
friends in the winter of 2002/2003. john hudaks recordings for
"winter garden" were based on a contact microphone buried
overnight in snow that turned to ice, then he recorded snow
falling on this enveloping ice. the basic recordings for
stephan mathieus "nuit blanche" were made on christmas eve 2002
with eva-lucy mathieu on ocarina and himself on pump organ.
Finally these original pieces were exchanged and transformed
into a calm, minimal suite of digital variations.
john hudak has been interested in sound and music from the age
of four when he began to play a variety of instruments. from
1979 on he studied video, photography, creative writing and
dance and began to create taped soundtracks for his solo
performance art pieces. in recent years, he has concentrated on
sound, particularly natural sounds.
hudak's current sound work focuses on the minimalism and
repetition of sounds that are normally filtered out or
considered non-musical in our day-to-day lives. these sounds
are recorded, deconstructed and processed, their rhythms and
textures being the basis for aural manipulations. john hudak
lives and works in dobbs ferry, new york.

stephan mathieu is a selftaught musician who worked through the
1990s as an improvising drummer. since 1998 he works in the
field of digital art, creating music, sound installations,
graphic design, photography and video. he is teaching digital
art and concepts at the university of fine arts and design in
his hometown saarbrⁿcken, germany and is a guest lecturer at
the bauhaus university, weimar and the merz-akademie,
stuttgart.
