Rameses III are Spencer Grady (guitars, noises), Steve Lewis
(guitars, percussion), and Daniel Freeman (keyboards,
processing). They have recently played with Jack Rose, David
Grubbs, Christina Carter (Charlambides), Fursaxa and The Album
Leaf and their 4th release , the 'Jozepha' mini-album, has just
come out on New Zealand's Celebrate Psi-Phenomenon Records.

INTERVIEW
Not exactly your typical Firefly export, Rameses III are here
to show us that there is more to life than big riffs. Moulding
together their own unique take on country, lofi indie and as
quiet as you like it acoustic bliss, they are a music force to
be savoured. Therefore Play Dead caught up with them to find
out how they came into being and how exactly they found
themselves on a 'punk' label.
Play Dead (PD):
Introduce yourselves.
Rameses III (R3):
Rameses III comprises of Daniel Freeman (keyboards, backing
vocals, production and engineering, Stephen Lewis (acoustic
guitar) and Spencer Grady (guitars, vocals and percussion).
PD:
So what's with the name?
R3:
Rameses III (a.k.a. Rameses the Third) is a result of an
interest we share in Egyptology, and in a lesser known Pharoah
trying hard to live up to a reputation (of Rameses II) and,
well, there are three of us, each an "I" of Rameses III. We
like the mystical connection associated with ancient Egypt.
PD:
How did it come about that Firefly signed you?
R3:
Ha, "signed" - is that right? Wel I have known Chris for a few
years and knew that our tastes converged in certain areas, the
country music of Uncle Tupelo and the singing-song writing of
Mark Eitzel and Mark Kozelek Once we had collected a few songs
that seemed to touch upon this style I thought it the right
thing to send him a CDR. As it happens, he liked it and we
started to discuss the wisdom of working together to release
some of our music. It seems to be working well.
PD:
How would you describe your sound to a stranger?
R3:
Well I think our music is a reflection of all the members'
tastes - the 60s folk guitarists of Takoma artists such as John
Fahey and Peter Lang, the goth flavours of the 4AD label, the
singer songwriters of alternative country (Smog, Red House
Painters, Palace etc), maybe a dose of the drone / Kranky
brigade (Stars of the Lid et al) and the isolationist ambience
of Tomas K÷ner and Paul Schⁿtze.
PD:
Talk us through your next release.
R3:
Well that's the Firefly one - it is going to be a mini-album,
tentatively called Folk Hymns. I think there are some beautiful
songs on there, displaying different shades of the Rameses
sound. There is also a split single with Canadian band The
Epidemic, which should be out at the end of March on Wakusei
Records.
PD:
What do you hope to acheive as a band?
R3:
It is always incremental - you acheive one thing (we did our
first gig in January this year, which was a great buzz for us)
and you seek out the next. The goalposts keep shifting. I
guess, in general terms, to put music out that interests and,
in some way, entertains people and principally to remain
friends with the people in this band.
