On September 28, 2011, the pride of Peter Bangs Vej burned to the
ground. The empty lot conjures up memories for several generations
of athletes and rock and jazz fans with each his own story of KB
Hallen. Originally built for sports, jazz music often filled the
hall with sweating audiences and atmosphere. This double CD set is a
musical documentation of KB Hallen - the most important concert
venue in Copenhagen, Denmark of the 1950's. For a decade the hall
was the setting for initial encounters with many of the finest
American jazz artists. From old New Orleans giants to the young
comets in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, whose playing hinted at what
would be happening on stages around the city from the 1960's and
onwards.
Around 1960 most large jazz concerts in Copenhagen moved to other
venues, and an era ended. In 2011 the building vanished with many of
its memories - but some have been saved for posterity in this
selection. We have done our utmost to clean up tapes, and the sound
is surprisingly good and persuasive. The 30-page booklet features
thorough liner notes and wonderful original photos. This release
takes Stunt Records in a new direction. We are pleased and proud to
present this piece of Danish jazz history; a nostalgic trip down
memory lane and a unique documentation of some of the music played
at the legendary KB Hallen.
We have presented the music chronologically. It has not been
possible to find recordings from all of the many concerts, but there
is plenty of music to discover. It is a delight listening to the
CD's from beginning to end - with many pleasant surprises along the
way - but we are certain that you will soon find your own personal
favorites.
