▐█ RELEASE NOTES: ▐█▌
▐█ █▌
▐█ It's tempting to call Cheating Kay discordant, but that's not █▌
▐█ strictly true. There's a feeling of haziness about them, too -- █▌
▐█ but it's only a feeling. Sonically, they're crystal clear. █▌
▐█ They've struck a surreal, elusive balance with Again, the █▌
▐█ Distance (O Altitudo) that is more or less impossible to █▌
▐█ satisfactorily describe. It's unfortunate, then, that describing █▌
▐█ them happens to be my job. █▌
▐█ First of all, they're really, really good at what they do. If █▌
▐█ you're asking yourself, "Should I buy this album?" Well, yeah, █▌
▐█ you probably should. █▌
▐█ █▌
▐█ Beyond that point, though, the territory becomes a little murky. █▌
▐█ There's a (much-maligned) name for this sound -- post-rock -- █▌
▐█ but numerous jazz records have also been referred to as such, so █▌
▐█ it's a useless descriptor. Stylistically, Cheating Kay borrow █▌
▐█ from alt-country, hardcore and a number of pop traditions. They █▌
▐█ tie it all together with a muscular rhythm section, which █▌
▐█ squeezes loose songs together so tightly that you will, as I █▌
▐█ must struggle not to, imagine discord where it does not exist. █▌
▐█ As tight as these songs are, as texturally coherent as they are, █▌
▐█ you'll get the feeling that there ought to be a lot more sonic █▌
▐█ overlap. There isn't. Piano, electric guitar and tight drums are █▌
▐█ mixed with a surprising, pristine perfection into a disquieting █▌
▐█ and seductive whole, beautiful and pleasantly painful. Cheating █▌
▐█ Kay's charms are ephemeral, but their music is muscular and █▌
▐█ urgent. They are neither a haze, nor a twinkle, nor a flexed █▌
▐█ muscle, nor a stream; they are an alchemical amalgam, as █▌
▐█ energetic and beautiful as great jazz, but with none of the █▌
▐█ chaos. █▌
▐█ █▌
▐█ Sitting atop this unlikely-yet-impressive foundation are █▌
▐█ vocalists Sarah and Thomas Mueller. They do the duet thing, and █▌
▐█ they do it damn well. Their voices -- his somewhere toward the █▌
▐█ falsetto end of the continuum, hers a rich tenor -- blend very, █▌
▐█ very well. Sarah can work in a number of styles effectively, at █▌
▐█ her best conveying an angelic country songstress with maximal █▌
▐█ effect and minimal twang. Thomas isn't quite as strong a singer, █▌
▐█ but he stays well within his range most of the time (with the █▌
▐█ notable exception of the penultimate "Myths and Legends █▌
▐█ (Dream)"), pulling out occasional impassioned, crackling notes █▌
▐█ when the time is right. █▌
▐█ █▌
▐█ These ephemeral elements coalesce in a powerful, enticing album, █▌
▐█ designed for adventurous listeners who'd prefer to rediscover █▌
▐█ standard compositional theory rather than watch somebody like █▌
▐█ the Animal Collective throw it out altogether. Call it pop, call █▌
▐█ it alt-country, call it post-rock; whatever it is, it's fresh, █▌
▐█ it's smart and you could play it on the radio. That's always █▌
▐█ exciting. █▌
