█ Bottom line up front: Chaos Abomination is a █
█ decent piece of work. A nice bite for maniacal █
█ death cultists, but it is not going to satisfy for █
█ too long and it is rather obvious that we are only █
█ talking about mere hours that the dosage of █
█ musical chaos and abomination have to be █
            █ increased. █
█ Probably not longer than 15 seconds into this █
█ record you realize this opus is in the fashion of █
█ several more South-American death metal outfits █
█ such as Ancient Crypts, Oraculum, Sarcofago or █
█ Houston's Blaspherian, just to name a few bands █
█ that provide unaffected extreme music. Chile's █
█ Atomicide fittingly named their second full length █
█ release ôChaos Abomination,ö with the sides ides █
█ of the vinyl edition entitled Chaos and █
█ Abomination, clearly presenting what they are █
█ named after. The guitar riffs are frantic, the █
█ drums simply bludgeon and the vocals are buried █
█ under ridiculous amounts of reverb that turn this █
█ vocal performance into something inhuman. █
█ The nine songs on Chaos Abomination are downright █
█ rampant and fatal. Compared to their debut █
█ Spreading the Cult of Death of 2013 nothing █
█ mentionable happened concerning style, composition █
█ or attitude. The musicianship and the sound on █
█ Chaos Abomination are far from poor, but simply █
█ lack ingenuity, that will make it hard to follow █
█ the album for its entire length. Altogether, this █
█ band sounds pretty routine, not in a bored way, █
█ but rather expressing familiarity with their █
█ instruments. The tremolo picking is for the most █
█ part aggressive, accentuated and worthy of playing █
█ death metal, even though the chord progressions █
█ are downright basic death metal armaments. Even if █
█ the tracks are getting old after a while I cannot █
█ really say I did not enjoy both sides. No one █
█ would shed a tear if this opus did not exist, but █
█ it is always nice to know another and another █
█ extreme attempt to set the nuclear holocaust to █
█ music. Are Atomicide going to improve? No one will █
█ tell unless the third full-length record will █
            █ strike upon mankind. █
█ As for the music there is not too much to say. █
█ Nothing too unpredictable happens here. What we █
█ are dealing with here is nothing more than █
█ one-dimensional death metal with an uncompromising █
█ approach that leaves no space for invention. █
█ Honestly, what did you expect to buy/listen to █
            █ with a record by such a title? █
            █ █
            █ --- █
            █ █
█ Controlled chaos is the best method to describe █
█ ChileÆs Atomicide, which rips flesh and stacks █
█ bodies in a professional manner, fusing the █
█ obsidian sheen of monolithic death metal in the █
█ vein of later Behemoth and Vader with just enough █
█ thrash spasticity to plant the seeds of something █
█ potentially greater and undoubtedly more endearing █
█ than the sum of its individual parts. Chaos █
█ Abomination may feature little thought concerning █
█ nomenclature alone, but despite being only the █
█ bandÆs second full-length release, the seniority █
█ of Cesar Gonzalez and the supporting cast he has █
█ congregated for the task shines through the clouds █
█ of smoke billowing after this damn thing wraps up. █
█ It can be somewhat challenging getting excited █
█ over yet another modern death metal band, but to █
█ be frank, there is very little modern about █
█ AtomicideÆs style. Chaos Abomination is an aurally █
█ suffocating, lithe exercise in the usually █
█ lumbering death metal patchwork, but Gonzalez has █
█ a clear view of his target and it clearly shows █
            █ after repeated listens. █
█ So to jump right into the obvious and expected █
█ Morbid Angel comparison, I have to say that I have █
█ never come across a band that so accurately nails █
█ the Altars of Madness aesthetic before. The █
█ spacious and grimy-sounding vocals bob and weave █
█ throughout face-melting tremolo abuse and monster █
█ grooves in nearly equal measure, and arbitrary █
█ outbursts of slicing velocity connect the more █
█ measured dots in a very consistent and endearing █
█ manner. This is also a very compact and accessible █
█ listen, falling just short of thirty-five minutes █
█ on the whole. Regardless, listening to the █
            █ knuckle-cracking, fretboard-snapping tenacity of █
█ riff behemoths like ôMegaton Desolationö leaves █
█ more to the imagination than may be expected. It █
█ just totally nails the occult mystique with the █
█ warped and twisted leadwork courtesy of █
█ Deathbringer. The main riff screams of the verses █
█ of ôSuffocation,ö and in fact that particular riff █
█ epithet makes multiple appearances throughout the █
█ entire record. This constitutes the majority of █
█ Chaos Abomination, but we also get more lurching █
█ fare like the opener ôIs Vis Pacem Para Bellum,ö █
█ which strikes mid-paced gold with its pulverizing █
█ rhythms and exotic scale runs. █
█ A fine contingent of both influence and execution █
█ on the whole, but this album isnÆt going to break █
█ any previous records or shock even intermediate █
█ ears. This doesnÆt mean that what is here is █
█ executed poorly, and I am sure Gonzalez is █
█ inherently cogent of the crowd he caters to here. █
█ To expand on my earlier appraisal of the bandÆs █
█ lack of modern appropriations, I must concede that █
█ the production values certainly take amicable █
█ stock of the here and now, and come out of the █
█ other end with a surly, soiled guitar tone and █
█ pluggy percussive slant. AndresÆ kit lacks █
█ lower-end depth, but is slanted to take advantage █
█ of his abilities, what with a very direct and █
█ harsh snare sound and surgical blasting resonance. █
█ The album sounds professional enough to pass █
█ muster, and the remaining performances more than █
█ make up for any perceived faults concerning █
█ AtomicideÆs lack of originality or ability to █
█ stretch preconceived boundaries. It is nice to see █
█ a death metal band hail back to some of the █
█ earliest days of the style, wherein there was █
█ still a fair agglomeration of thrash influence █
█ lurking within. Chaos Abomination is an easy █
█ record to just break out and go to town with, an █
█ effort that can be enjoyed both by the OSDM crowd █
█ and those newcomers weaned on more polished, █
█ audacious fare. A good album that yields little █
█ room for improvement, and a reason to keep tabs on █
█ Atomicide as a whole. Now thanks to this, I have █
█ been inspired to track down the bandÆs first █
█ record and see what led up to this point, but I am █
█ sure I will like what I hear. Arguably safe, but █
            █ consistent effort. █
