│║ As I mentioned in my previous review of Endgame, ║ │
│║ Megadeth is a bit of a ôroller coasterö band. ║ │
│║ Their first six albums ranged from very good to ║ │
│║ straight-up classic while their next three ║ │
│║ ranged from decent to questionable. The band ║ │
│║ began to right the ship with The System Has ║ │
│║ Failed before a brilliant return to form with ║ │
│║ United Abominations and Endgame. Th1rt3en was a ║ │
│║ bit of a mixed bag and Super Collider, while not ║ │
│║ as bad as most would have you believe, was a bit ║ │
│║ of a disappointment. At this stage in their ║ │
│║ career, most fans were ready to write off ║ │
│║ Megadeth as washed-up and past their prime. ║ │
│║ However, with Kiko Loureiro of Angra and Chris ║ │
│║ Adler of Lamb of God replacing Chris Broderick ║ │
│║ and Shawn Drover, respectively, and Dave ║ │
│║ MustaineÆs assertion that he would never write ║ │
│║ another commercial-oriented album again, it ║ │
│║ seemed that big changes were coming for ║ │
│║ Megadeth. And were they ever, as Dystopia ║ │
│║ already ranks among MegadethÆs best. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ While Super Collider and Th1rt3en acted more as ║ │
│║ attempts to get mainstream radio play, thrash is ║ │
│║ the name of the game for Dystopia. This never ║ │
│║ more evident than on the opening track The ║ │
│║ Threat is Real. Easily the fastest song on the ║ │
│║ album, the riffs are intense, blistering, and ║ │
│║ unrelenting. Although the band has maintained ║ │
│║ that they will never release another Rust in ║ │
│║ Peace, Dystopia gives more than a few nods to ║ │
│║ that classic release. Both the title track and ║ │
│║ Fatal Illusion feature melody changes in the ║ │
│║ bridge and the guitar work between Dave and Kiko ║ │
│║ is reminiscent of the glory days with Marty ║ │
│║ Friedman. Other nods to past Megadeth songs ║ │
│║ include Bullet to the Brain, which is ║ │
│║ reminiscent of In My Darkest Hour and Post ║ │
│║ American World, which is basically a darker ║ │
│║ version of Symphony of Destruction. The middle ║ │
│║ of the album actually features some of ║ │
│║ MegadethÆs darkest material to date, culminating ║ │
│║ in the heaviest song, Poisonous Shadows. Though ║ │
│║ the song features orchestral arrangements and a ║ │
│║ haunting piano outro, the riffs are almost ║ │
│║ overpowering. Conquer or Die is a brief but ║ │
│║ serviceable instrumental, Lying in State chugs ║ │
│║ with the utmost urgency, and The Emperor is an ║ │
│║ interesting yet successful attempt at a more ║ │
│║ mainstream sound. Rounding out the album is a ║ │
│║ cover of Foreign Policy by the punk band Fear. ║ │
│║ Like Judas Priest, Megadeth has always done a ║ │
│║ commendable job in adding their own unique twist ║ │
│║ to covers, and Foreign Policy is no exception. ║ │
│║ Whether the music is fast and thrashy or heavy ║ │
│║ and mid-pace, Megadeth absolutely delivers. Dave ║ │
│║ Ellefson remains as reliable as ever on the bass ║ │
│║ and even provides a cool solo on Fatal Illusion, ║ │
│║ while Chris AdlerÆs drumming is precise and ║ │
│║ tight. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ As the album title would suggest, Dystopia is ║ │
│║ chock full of songs about Dave MustaineÆs bleak ║ │
│║ view on the state of America and how itÆs all ║ │
│║ going to hell if we donÆt change it. Some might ║ │
│║ find it overbearing, but some of DaveÆs best ║ │
│║ lyrics have been rooted in his views on ║ │
│║ conspiracy and government. Whereas past attempts ║ │
│║ at commercial metal like Super Collider often ║ │
│║ featured lyrics that were bland and uninspired, ║ │
│║ Dave is far more motivated this time around now ║ │
│║ that he doesnÆt need to write songs to play on ║ │
│║ the radio. There is still some variety as well, ║ │
│║ as Bullet to the Brain is a story on the dangers ║ │
│║ of infidelity, Poisonous Shadows deals with ║ │
│║ regret and making up for past transgressions, ║ │
│║ and The Emperor is either about Obama or a ║ │
│║ celebrity Dave doesnÆt like. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The standard release of the album is a bit more ║ │
│║ consistent musically, as the iTunes version ║ │
│║ features the bonus tracks Look WhoÆs Talking and ║ │
│║ My Last Dying Wish. Both songs are more upbeat ║ │
│║ than the albumÆs middle, with Look WhoÆs Talking ║ │
│║ acting as a brief respite from the albumÆs ║ │
│║ darker material in between Poisonous Shadows and ║ │
│║ Conquer or Die. My Last Dying Wish on the other ║ │
│║ hand is more of the mainstream rock variety and ║ │
│║ sounds like it could have been on Super ║ │
│║ Collider. Look WhoÆs Talking is a solid song but ║ │
│║ not quite as strong as the rest of the album and ║ │
│║ My Last Dying Wish is pretty skippable. It was a ║ │
│║ wise choice to include both songs as bonuses ║ │
│║ rather than official tracks. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Perhaps not since Peace Sellsà has Megadeth put ║ │
│║ out an album with such consistent top-to-bottom ║ │
│║ quality (Rust in Peace had a few less than ║ │
│║ stellar songs in the middle). DaveÆs ║ │
│║ politically-charged lyrics may not be for ║ │
│║ everyone, but the bandÆs strength has always ║ │
│║ been in its music and itÆs as strong as ever ║ │
│║ this time around. The bonus tracks on the iTunes ║ │
│║ release are decent enough to not take away from ║ │
│║ the albumÆs overall quality even if My Last ║ │
│║ Dying Wish is rather lackluster. Overall, ║ │
│║ Megadeth truly sounds rejuvenated and ready to ║ │
│║ once again take on the world. By the time ║ │
│║ Foreign Policy ends, thereÆs a good chance ║ │
│║ youÆre left wanting more. Hopefully their next ║ │
│║ album continues that upward momentum and avoids ║ │
│║ another roller coaster dip. ║ │
