│║ Tribute albums or cover albums dedicated to a ║ │
│║ singular band or artist are a peculiar and ║ │
│║ somewhat uncommon phenomenon. Perhaps best known ║ │
│║ through various studio endeavors by Dream ║ │
│║ Theater paying homage to their influences, it is ║ │
│║ an idea that might be toyed with at times by any ║ │
│║ band, but usually only comes to fruition in the ║ │
│║ form of a VA compilation. One way to look at ║ │
│║ JornÆs own full length homage to one of metalÆs ║ │
│║ forefathers in ôDioö is as a VA compilation that ║ │
│║ came into being through a singular band, ║ │
│║ offering up a varied yet quite faithful ║ │
│║ collection of rediscovered gems from old and ║ │
│║ recent history. Some might argue that it is in ║ │
│║ bad taste given its close proximity to RonnieÆs ║ │
│║ passing (there are varying views on the time and ║ │
│║ circumstances that led to Jorn deciding to do ║ │
│║ this album), but when push comes to shove, music ║ │
│║ is what he lived for, and the more of it the ║ │
│║ merrier. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ This album is, plainly speaking, a pretty daring ║ │
│║ attempt at taking a large array of DioÆs work by ║ │
│║ the famed Masterplan vocalist and making them ║ │
│║ his own while keeping them in the same basic ║ │
│║ style. His lower tinged, gravely vocal ║ │
│║ channeling of David Coverdale puts a bit more of ║ │
│║ a hard rock aesthetic to things, while the rest ║ │
│║ of the arrangement takes on a heavy yet smooth ║ │
│║ character similar to DioÆs studio albums during ║ │
│║ the past decade, particularly that of ôKilling ║ │
│║ The Dragonö. The selection of songs itself is ║ │
│║ fairly interesting, essentially taking a middle ║ │
│║ road between doing nothing but obligatory ║ │
│║ classics or seeking out obscurities. The dark, ║ │
│║ sludgy era with Tracey G in the 90s and the ║ │
│║ short, bluesy rocking stint with Rowan Robertson ║ │
│║ are avoided, and surprisingly enough ôThe Last ║ │
│║ In Lineö doesnÆt see any representation on here ║ │
│║ either. But we are treated to a healthy sum of ║ │
│║ crushers off of ôHoly Diverö, though thankfully ║ │
│║ both the overplayed studio favorite ôRainbow In ║ │
│║ The Darkö and the nearly just as overdone title ║ │
│║ track have been skipped. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Of the contents found on here, the place where ║ │
│║ this album really comes together is actually ║ │
│║ where it goes into less treaded territory. ║ │
│║ ôNight Peopleö and ôSacred Heartö are among the ║ │
│║ more faithfully reproduced of the bunch, though ║ │
│║ the latter has had its epic atmospheric ║ │
│║ qualities exaggerated and the former has had its ║ │
│║ keyboard load lightened considerably in order to ║ │
│║ give the guitars more punch. ôSunset Supermanö ║ │
│║ is also very well revisited, thought chopping ║ │
│║ off the original keyboard intro steals some of ║ │
│║ the songÆs thunder. But the most similar to its ║ │
│║ original version is the bandÆs cover of ôPushö, ║ │
│║ which sees little difference from the original ║ │
│║ apart from JornÆs different vocal character, and ║ │
│║ that includes the Vivian Campbell on steroids ║ │
│║ character that Doug AldrichÆs brand of lead ║ │
│║ playing brought to the original, which actually ║ │
│║ turns out to be the character that most of the ║ │
│║ solos on this entire album hearken towards. The ║ │
│║ only area where this trend doesnÆt quite hold ║ │
│║ up, which is also the best song on here, is in ║ │
│║ ôLord Of The Last Dayö. My own bias in favor of ║ │
│║ DioÆs lone concept album non-withstanding, the ║ │
│║ heavy trudging doom metal influences are ║ │
│║ perfectly maintained here, and the replacing of ║ │
│║ the Gregorian chants at the end of the original ║ │
│║ with a smooth flowing clean solo finale closes ║ │
│║ things out perfectly. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The rest of the contents on here range from good ║ │
│║ to acceptable, with a few additions here and a ║ │
│║ few omissions there to change things up a bit. ║ │
│║ Whether in an attempt to recreate the medley ║ │
│║ approach that Dio frequently did while on tour ║ │
│║ during the 80s and 90s, the ôLonely Is The ║ │
│║ Word/Letters From Earthö double feature, which ║ │
│║ also includes fleeting musical references to ║ │
│║ ôSign Of The Southern Crossö and ôChildren Of ║ │
│║ The Seaö, does a fair job but leaves a little to ║ │
│║ be desired considering the large amounts of ║ │
│║ untapped diamonds in DioÆs lengthy career with ║ │
│║ Sabbath. The remake of ôKill The Kingö suffers ║ │
│║ from having the melodic guitar intro chopped off ║ │
│║ and showcases the only time where JornÆs vocals ║ │
│║ just get way too rough and lose their intensity, ║ │
│║ a fate that also befell another otherwise ║ │
│║ stellar vocalist Ralf Scheepers when he tried to ║ │
│║ sing this song as well. The material from the ║ │
│║ ôHoly Diverö album, which is the most ║ │
│║ represented album on here, is largely par for ║ │
│║ the course vocally and above average musically, ║ │
│║ with ôDonÆt Talk To Strangersö being the ║ │
│║ highlight of the bunch. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Although not quite the best song on here, the ║ │
│║ overall spirit of this album can be summed up by ║ │
│║ hearing JornÆs original composition ôSong For ║ │
│║ Ronnie Jamesö. Essentially a homage to the style ║ │
│║ and character spanning DioÆs last 3 studio ║ │
│║ albums, it mostly grooves in down tempo land ║ │
│║ with heavy droning main riff that largely ║ │
│║ resembles that of ôRock And Rollö off of ║ │
│║ ôKilling The Dragonö, though with a much longer ║ │
│║ acoustic intro that carries the melodic charm of ║ │
│║ ôMy Eyesö and the atmospheric density of several ║ │
│║ selections from ôMagicaö. Littered with lyrical ║ │
│║ references to various songs and quotes by the ║ │
│║ now fallen metal hero and pioneer, it is a fine ║ │
│║ testimony of one fanÆs adoration to a new ║ │
│║ generation of Dio fanatics. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ As a ever-loyal fan boy of all things Ronnie ║ │
│║ James, IÆm pretty well biased in favor of what ║ │
│║ has been done here, but as a whole, this doesnÆt ║ │
│║ quite cross over from being a worthy purchase to ║ │
│║ being absolutely essential. ItÆs a good listen, ║ │
│║ especially for those who are fans of Jorn and ║ │
│║ who would like their own copy of the original ║ │
│║ opening song, but as with all cover albums, no ║ │
│║ matter how good they might be youÆre usually ║ │
│║ better off getting the music from the original ║ │
