Release Notes:
Hailing from the Sydney capital, Jim Wilson is the next artist
off the Australian production line to supply his talent to the
Particles imprint. Following in the footsteps of such exciting
countrymen as Verve and Matter, Wilson and his Somersault
production moniker now show us the future through "Zodiacs and
That". An established funk guitarist in his own right,
Somersault has trodden an impressive path, both as working
musician and respected electronic music producer. Furthermore,
a triumvirate of skills has seen him play at festivals
including "Rabbits Easts Lettuce", clubs in his hometown and
further afield in Vietnam's Hanoi capital. Supporting such
luminary acts as PleasureKraft, DCup and Goldfields, Jim Wilson
has seen Somersault's success roll relentlessly forwards. A
debutant to Particles in his current production guise,
Somersault describes his sound as "uncompromising". Influenced
by the "shuffling rhythms of UK garage, rolling tech house and
progressive techno", Wilson's Soundcloud pays homage to the
golden age of UK garage with a tribute remix of Craig David's
"Fill Me In". The musical triptych that comprises the "Zodiacs
and That" EP opens with the ironically titled, "Space is Big".
Somersault's influences can clearly be heard through soft chord
stabs that build a rhythmic pattern, rising in sustained,
filtered splendour, accompanied by a ticking percussive groove
and driving beat. Counterpoint riffs provide further melodic
high points and Somersault's artistic integrity as a guitarist
is keenly felt. "Horrorscope" immediately provides a fulsome
beats driven adventure with dance floor rhythms sat enticingly
alongside melodic sequences that echo the innovative sounds of
Lemon Jelly's "Lost Horizons". A chunky stab riff provides
further depth and rhythmic joy in a track that never takes
itself too seriously. The final offering sees a delicious,
bouncing bass groove, anchor itself in elegant fashion to an
intelligently swung hi-hat groove in "Deep Afterthought". As
the track evolves, a wonderfully worked rhythmic melodic
pattern develops which then takes on an entirely different
direction post-breakdown and into the third movement. Retro
influences abound with spot effects reminiscent of Future Sound
of London's ambient works and the resultant effect is to create
a highly original work of skill and ingenuity. Three new tracks
from Somersault have ensured the stars align in astrological
symmetry with "Zodiacs and That". Directed by Jay Epoch AandR
