Note: This remaster contains 4 additional tracks to the 1983
release.
These were the days when bands could take three or four years to
release their next album. Tears for Fears were one of these bands
and you had to be patient as you eagerly awaited the next release
(sometimes you wondered if a band had disappeared from the face of
the earth) But looking back it proves it was worth it. Tears for
Fears released three fantastic, well arranged, melody ridden albums
between 1981 and 1989, namely 'The Hurting', 'Songs from the Big
Chair' and 'Sowing the Seeds of Love.' Record companies must have
given bands more time to work on their music then and it shows. 'The
Hurting' has it's own ditinct sound and atmosphere, revels in sorrow
and like some debuts of this kind, there is a lot of emotional
baggage being exorcised here. Tears for Fears new how to exploit the
synthesizer and new studio technology which arrived in abundance
during the early 80's and with it produced a subtle classic sound of
their own which still sounds fresh today, as if they new how to
create a timeless album which still retained a slice of its time.
Anyway, any new listener will not be disappointed with this, all the
songs are strong and you`ll always remember the time you listened to
it.
Personal Note: This was one of my favorite albums from college
(guess that dates me) but the tone, angst and beauty of the album
still brings a tear to my eye and a rush of memories every time I
hear it. It is an album that it is something truly special and I
encourage everyone to give it a listen no matter what genre of music
you normally listen to. It is Tears For Fears first album and is a
lot less commercial and more indie and darker and introspective than
their later work.
