│ │░
│ With interest in (traditional) folk music currently │░
│ booming in Belgium, Urban Trad have managed to combine the │░
│ best in local folk with modern dance rythms to create │░
│ "techno-ambient influenced folk". ... The result is │░
│ nothing less than astonishing │░
│ │░
│ BIOGRAPY │░
│ │░
│ Urban Trad is the spiritual child of the young Belgian │░
│ composer Yves Barbieux. His one desire was to have his │░
│ music performed by various artists with roots in folk and │░
│ traditional music and as a result the group's name speaks │░
│ for itself. Their aim has always been to make traditional │░
│ and folk-inspired music known to a wider audience that is │░
│ more familiar with current modern dance and techno sounds. │░
│ │░
│ The story of Urban Trad began in June 2001, when Yves │░
│ Barbieux's compositions were arranged at the Brussels │░
│ studio of Nicolas Vandooren. The most renowned musicians │░
│ of the Belgian and international folk scene - from Thom │░
│ Theuns (Ambrozijn) to Perry Rose and Ialma to Hans │░
│ Quaghebeur (Kadril) - contributed to Urban Trad's first CD │░
│ "One-o-Four" which was rereleased in early 2001 by │░
│ Universal. │░
│ │░
│ The result? One-O-Four, a danceable CD full of melodious │░
│ big-city-folk, is released in early 2001 by Universal and │░
│ is enthusiastically received by press and public. │░
│ │░
│ Urban Trad is convincing, not only on CD but also on │░
│ stage: the group is received just as enthusiastically in │░
│ the festival field (amongst others, Folk Dranouter) as it │░
│ is in cultural centres. It has quickly grown into a │░
│ sensation. │░
│ │░
│ The summer of 2002 means a new step for Urban Trad: │░
│ although the typical Urban Trad 'sound' stays deeply │░
│ rooted in the tradition of the folk music, a member change │░
│ provides a more rhythmic sound. │░

│ PRESS │░
│ │░
│ * Billboard Magazine - International 15/10/2000 │░
│ With Folk Music currently booming in Belgium, Urban Trad │░
│ has managed to combine the finest local traditional music │░
│ with modern dance rythms. Yves Barbieux, a talented young │░
│ composer from the band Co∩ncidence, put the project │░
│ together combining new material and folk covers under the │░
│ name Urban Trad for the Album "One o Four" (Universal │░
│ Music). The results are astonishing, as Barbieux persuaded │░
│ the country's best folk musicians to join him. │░
│ Apart from fellow members of Co∩ncidence and musicians │░
│ from Orion, Ambrozijn, Kadril, and the Spanish Galician │░
│ female sextet Ialma, the almbum also features Perry Rose │░
│ on "Rap a Doo", one of the album's potential singles. The │░
│ 17 piece band played the Dranouter Festival in August. │░
│ Universal planned an international release... │░
│ │░
│ * Green Man Review - USA - 31/03/2001 │░
│ Based in Belgium, Urban Trad's One O Four is something │░
│ else. The key performers are Yves Barbieux, who composed │░
│ the music, and Nicolas Vandooren. But there more than │░
│ performers on this CD, comprising what the first song │░
│ describes as the "Crew." The music has a strong Celtic │░
│ base, mixing in other traditions, New Age, urban, jazz, │░
│ computer-generated music, and a lot of imagination. │░
│ The leadoff track, "Subway Call" starts with an │░
│ Irish-sounding air that fades into the sound of a subway, │░
│ followed by a brief rap that sets the mood for the CD as │░
│ "We'll be shaking up traditions to its urban heartbeat." │░
│ The rap might have felt out of place, but the CD cuts │░
│ straight into the next track, "Avreel," which features │░
│ several good instrumental solos, including a fine bit with │░
│ muted trumpet. │░
│ "Vodka Time" is a self-described funky bit of │░
│ Russian-style music with some interesting computer-based │░
│ percussion effects. The effect sounds like an electronic │░
│ circus, and I mean that in a good way. "Brass Corto" │░
│ features excellent accordion playing from Requel Gigot, │░
│ backed nicely by a brass section that includes a bass │░
│ tuba. Gigot's playing is all the more impressive in that │░
│ it was improvised. The most impressive track is the final │░
│ one, "Mecanix," in which each member of the Urban Trad │░
│ crew introduces themselves and performs a brief solo, over │░
│ a solid, driving beat. │░
│ If the quotation from "Subway Call" may be taken as a │░
│ mission statement, then One O Four meets and exceeds │░
│ expectations. If my descriptions of the songs have been a │░
│ bit brief, it's because I really don't have much to │░
│ compare it to. The closest I can think of is Nahoo, but │░
│ Urban Trad takes less of a tribal and more of an urban │░
│ beat as its base. But one similarity with Nahoo is that it │░
│ will be joining my favorites. Hopefully, this will not be │░
│ the only CD to come from the Urban Trad crew. Urban Trad │░
│ has a home page here. │░
│ │░
│ * MM Review - USA 01/10/2001 │░
│ When traditional world music is paired with modern │░
│ production techniques, it can oftentimes make for strange │░
│ bedfellows. This is sometimes the case with Urban Trad, │░
│ whose name just about says it all. Nevertheless, there are │░
│ a few treats to be devoured here. │░
│ One is the bouncy "Vodka Time," which spins and twirls │░
│ like a drunken happy hour after a long day's work. Equally │░
│ enjoyable is "Waltzing Dranouter," which softly combines │░
│ various pipes and whistles into a three-quarter time dance │░
│ of joy. Even its urban-oriented percussion affects donÆt │░
│ spoil its happy mood. "Rap-a-doo" is not as scary as its │░
│ title makes it soundùthis is not Gaelic hip-hop, friend. │░
│ Instead, it's a song steeped in the mating tradition, and │░
│ is about a boy who wants to marry a beautiful and eligible │░
│ girl. The song "Mecanix," is closer to what its title │░
│ suggests, as it applies heavy drum beats, processed vocals │░
│ and acoustic guitars matched to a lonesome gypsy fiddle, │░
│ and what sounds like Bulgarian group vocals and funky │░
│ bass. It's one heady mix, indeed, especially when unlikely │░
│ horn parts jump in toward the middle. This is the ultimate │░
│ cross-cultural pollination the group's name suggests. The │░
│ lyrics for "Mecanix" are nothing more than its various │░
│ participants introducing themselves and explaining what │░
│ instruments they play, which gets old fast. │░
│ Ultimately, One O Four is much more trad than it is urban, │░
│ which is a good thing. If you're looking for techno or │░
│ dance musicùwith just a tad of world music spice - Urban │░
│ Trad is not for you. But if you want to hear traditional │░
│ music aided by twenty-first century production and studio │░
│ affects, this one might be the right choice.-Dan MacIntosh │░
│ │░
│ * FOLK WORLD - INTERNATIONAL 15/09/2001 │░
│ Urban Trad is another proof that Belgium - in the heart of │░
│ Europe - is at the moment maybe the heart of innovative │░
│ young European folk music. Urban Trad is a project of the │░
│ young composer Yves Barbieux. He creates a sound rooted in │░
│ traditional music from Europe (mostly the 'celtic regions' │░
│ Ireland, Scotland, Galicia...) - but the music comes from │░
│ urban regions and goes further than the traditions. It is │░
│ a hot music melange, and although it has many influences │░
│ from modern forms of music, it has a lot to offer to fans │░
│ of traddy music. │░
│ Yves is the composer, and he has gathered many musicians │░
│ from the top of the scene in Belgium: Thom Theuns │░
│ (Ambrozijn) on guitar, three girls from the excellent │░
│ Belgium based Galician folk choir Ialma, Michael Horgan │░
│ (uilleann pipes) of Shantalla, Raquel Gigot (accordions) │░
│ and Rudy Velghe (nyckelharpa, violin, mandolin) of Orion, │░
│ Luc Pilartz (violin, bagpipe), Nicolas Vandooren │░
│ (programming, keys, vocals, electric guitar, soprano sax), │░
│ etc. Yves himself plays whistles, recordes, bagpipe, keys. │░
│ The album is very exciting - I am really looking forward │░
│ to see them live. │░
│ │░
│ * Netbeat.com - www 25/09/2000 │░
│ The Celtic renaissance has turned up a lot of wispy music │░
│ over the past few years. Urban Trad is not part of that. │░
│ The project was put together by Yves Barbieux, a member of │░
│ Co∩ncidence. The idea, according to Yves, is to mix Celtic │░
│ music with more - you guessed it - urban sounds. It could │░
│ be a recipe for disaster. But the album One o Four is a │░
│ refreshingly straightforward collection of contemporary │░
│ folk. The fiddle- and whistle-playing is as good as it │░
│ gets. They are underpinned by largely rythmic and │░
│ tastefully produced synth loops. │░
│ In concert recently at the Galician Centre in Brussels, │░
│ UrbanTrad turned in an excellent show. Barbieux himself is │░
│ a competent whistle player who knows a good musician when │░
│ he sees one. He was accompanied on the night by a mix of │░
│ European Celtiana. These included Rudy Velghe (Orion), │░
│ Perry Rose and the stunning Galician vocal outfit Ialma. │░
│ The result was a lively session that had the punters │░
│ literally waltzing around the grandiose setting of the │░
│ former department store. If their appearance at the │░
│ Dranouter festival was as good as this, it is hardly │░
│ surprising they are picking up good reviews. It looks as │░
│ if Europe has a promising new Celtic band to watch. │░
│ Michael Leahy │░
│ │░
│ * The Bulletin - Belgium 13/10/2000 │░
│ The most startling accomplishment of all. A pipe and │░
│ whistle player from the French-language folk-rock band │░
│ Coincidence named Yv. Barbieux came out last spring with │░
│ an album featuring traditionally-influenced tunes which he │░
│ had written, using as wide a range of instruments as │░
│ Kadril, and even adding the whole complex of jazz and │░
│ techno sounds (horns and drum machines) through the good │░
│ offices of BeatNic Vandooren. Traditionally-influenced, │░
│ sure, everybody has been there - but Barbieux made it over │░
│ the ineffable barrier into the Promised Land of original │░
│ composition. And at more than one level - for One O Four │░
│ is a true concept album, right down to the album cover, │░
│ which shows a nice green lawn next to the subway tracks in │░
│ a Metro station well-known to Brussels college students. │░
│ This trip opens with a mystical slow meditation on pipes, │░
│ echoing in an empty Metro station at night. The train │░
│ arrives, and a brief rap poem (in English) read out by DJ │░
│ Koor welcomes us on board. This touch marks the "new │░
│ generation" aspect of Barbieux's work: the younger folkies │░
│ have grown up in a world dominated by rap and rock, and │░
│ it's with a certain sigh of resignation at first that they │░
│ set themselves to expressing their own culture in the foul │░
│ rag-and-bone shop of their own musical hearts. │░
│ Then "Avreel" begins - a bardic-beat march, rocking harder │░
│ and younger than Kadril, but with more than a hint of │░
│ self-doubt in the unhurried minor-key tune. Statement. │░
│ Repeat. Second subject, still a flute lead, but lifting │░
│ its head a little. Then recapitulation with accordion │░
│ (Raquel Gigot) in the lead, and Ambrozijn's Tom Theuns │░
│ insisting, not hammering at the beat sustained by the │░
│ electronic track. Then repeat of both first and second │░
│ subject, adding Rudy Velghe's fiddle to the flute and │░
│ accordion. │░
│ And then - mirabile dictu! - a third subject emerges, a │░
│ trip-hopped flute tune, set almost alone against the │░
│ snappy drum tracks, which abandons the minor-key doldrums │░
│ and which in some mysterious and yet totally natural way, │░
│ has decided. Has decided to play the hand dealt, to walk │░
│ to the beat drummed - and to smile the smirky elfin smile │░
│ that peers out from Barbieux' photos on the album. The │░
│ accordion is convinced and rollicks along for a repeat. │░
│ After that, the return to the first subject has a │░
│ completely different meaning. The grass by the tracks is │░
│ actually going to grow. │░
│ And it does grow. The Diatonic Angel (Laloy) is on board │░
│ for "Vodka Time", and now we're not marching down the │░
│ green street, we're jumping headlong. Full rein is given │░
│ to every kind of sound effect imaginable, but by the time │░
│ you hear the mad (live?) laugher, you realize that this is │░
│ still a folk tune, a country dance for a concrete country. │░
│ Same second subject pattern, with closely orchestrated │░
│ harmonies, as Fabrice Dumont's violin is added in, but │░
│ room is left for Laloy's monster chops to syncopate │░
│ everything. │░
│ After that fine party, we're ready for a little sweet │░
│ dream, maybe on the steps outside the house. "Waltzing │░
│ Dranouter" opens with a brief echo of the subway station │░
│ before tumbling into a free-limbed major-key accordion │░
│ tune (Laloy again) which is poignant but not maudlin, as │░
│ if the music now knew it had emotion in reserve it could │░
│ count on in a pinch. Now here comes the repeat - it's │░
│ Pilartz on violin, then on bagpipes! The second subject on │░
│ pipes has some of the deep-well strength of the Irish pipe │░
│ tunes. And then another third subject! The tempo quickens, │░
│ and suddenly we're not waltzing anymore - we might be │░
│ taking ship - while a fife-and-drum battery takes │░
│ possession of the tune with all the insouciance of an │░
│ American pep band at a football game. │░
│ Going further would be like telling you the end of a │░
│ movie. It's enough to say that Yv. Barbieux has cashed │░
│ more than one ticket on this unique album. He has composed │░
│ these tunes - that alone makes him unique. But he has │░
│ composed them with a consciousness of the rules which │░
│ Pilartz must applaud. He remained true to his age group │░
│ and his trad heart by getting away with using electronic │░
│ sounds and rap lyrics on a traditional album - and all │░
│ credit to Dr. Vandooren for the "urban" side of things. He │░
│ got members from all the best folk bands in Belgium to │░
│ collaborate on a project (Kadril's Hans Quaghebeur and │░
│ Shantalla's Horgan are here too). But more than that, he │░
│ found a way to express his generation's life in music - │░
│ even if that life cannot quite yet be expressed by words │░
│ or by the human voice. That is what remains to be done. In │░
│ the singer-songwriter "tradition", which withered, one │░
│ poet alone in the city with his or her thoughts could only │░
│ end up bouncing love songs off the wall. Yv. Barbieux has │░
│ taken a mighty, mighty swing at that wall. Boom. Boom. │░
│ Perhaps it will never trap him again. But please, Yv., │░
│ keep going, keep going. For the lesson of Lais is that we │░
│ need the words at some point. We need to have the emotions │░
│ of the music translated into words we can speak. Until │░
│ then, thanks, brother, for keeping me going. This will be │░
│ enough for a good while. │░
│ │░
│ * Music and Media - International - 28/10/2000 │░
│ With Interest in (traditional) folk music currently │░

│ Also remarkable is Urban Trad's irish style rendition of │░
│ AndrΘ Bilaek's La Belle Gigue into La Belle Jig and the │░
│ urban country waltz in waltzing Dranouter. │░
│ The Dranouter Festival (first Weekend in August-attendance │░
│ 35.000) was the first to stage an initially one-off live │░

│ Marc Vandermoortele, music programmer at VRT Radio1's │░

│ we play a wider diversity of tracks, the most remarkable │░
│ being La Belle Jig. Urban Trad is one of the tools to │░
│ bring 'folk' to a younger audience". │░
│ At RTBF-La premiΦre, fellow producer Didier Melon adds: │░
│ "The difficulty is to find a common sound between all │░
