ItÆs been a while since Ringo Woz æEre and the retrospective set released by
Loose a couple of years ago only served to remind old fans and new ones of the
depth of talent that is seemingly obscured by clouds and only apparent to the
true believers. Opening with the LaÆs like æMr SunshineÆ Bruntnell skewers the
acquisitive Donald TrumpÆs golf course atrocities in Scotland. As all true
satire itÆs made all the better for couching the polemic within a blinder of a
tune. æEnd of the WorldÆ follows, a beautiful , simple love song with trademark
Bruntnell bruised vocal and delightful slide flourishes. There is real joy in
the spaces in this song; the faded inflection laced with melancholy, the moments
when the song seems to exist purely on the echoes of the previous phrases.
Exquisite. æRainstarsÆ cleanses the palate with a spangly guitar and driving
drums. This is indie rock of the top drawer, Swooping harmonies and even a syth!
Then comes the epic æYuri GagarinÆ; a magisterial back beat signals a full
strength Crazy Horse workout more McNabb than Young as Pete waxes lyrical about
the aforementioned cosmonaut and a droning signature drifts in and out of the
story which climaxes with a stunning guitar solo that could grace any of NeilÆs
work.


After this the pace switches with æDance of the DeadÆ - vocals up front and a
folky, spooky almost gothic soundscape then follows. This is different for
Bruntnell - odd sounds drift in and out as we head for the chorus - delicate and
elegiac. Lovely. Another switch and we are back into a swampy guitar led groover
with a swooning chorus on æWhere the Snakes Hang Out.ö  æFishing the Flood
PlainÆ is classic Bruntnell, guitars upfront , shiny lead mirroring the vocals.
Smart and snappy and another timeless chorus. æPeak Operational ConditionÆ could
be a Buzzcocks song! æLong Way from HomeÆ comes slowly down the track with
synths and phasing and then blossoms into an almost perfect English ballad.
Acoustic guitar, crumpled heartfelt vocal, splashes of production colour and a
sublime lyric about ageing. However the highlight of the song comes towards the
end with the repeated lines, æIt waits for you even when it knows youÆre not
around.Æ Pure class. There are a couple more tracks that finish the album but
the peak has been scaled by now. This is a wonderful album. Literally no filler!
